Welcome to the beautiful live edge at the Oconee Bell Tiny Home Community.
Hi, I'm Alexis and I'm Christian and we are Tiny House Expedition and today we are taking a look
at this 28-foot gooseneck tiny house. It's one of several Airbnbs at Oconee Bell so it's a great
way to try out both the tiny home lifestyle and the tiny home community lifestyle. Be sure to
stick around to the end for our ideas on how to make this even better for full-time living.
One thing I think every tiny house should have is a deck and this one does. It's about 25 by 25
square so the great thing about a deck is it doubles your living space especially with having
a sunshade over the top. You can come out here any time of day. Well let's give you a look on
Welcome inside this 340 square foot gooseneck tiny house. It's got two bedrooms. One is a
traditional loft and the other one is actually a standing height bedroom. And that's the beauty
of gooseneck design and the interior design and decor is what I would call country chic.
Yeah I can totally see that. It has that classic down-to-earth coziness about it but with modern
accents that really elevates the entire space. Something I really appreciate about this design
is the dormer above the door because it really adds a lot of architectural interest and makes
it feel even more homey. Yeah totally yeah it gives the roofline a really interesting shape.
Yeah so it's not just a rectangle and that's how you avoid it just feeling like a box. So just
over here is the entryway and the Airbnb hosts really got this right because it has all the
things that we think an entryway should need and that's the place to put your keys, when you come
in and take your shoes off a place to put those, and a couple of hooks to put your jackets. So it
is a really thought out space even though it's you know small. A tiny space but a mighty space
and that's what tiny homes are all about and the bedroom back here isn't that tiny.
Let me give you a tour. So welcome to the bedroom. One thing I want to point out is that dormer I was
just bragging about. While it looks really cool it would have been best if it stopped just a little
bit sooner. That way you wouldn't have to worry about hitting your head at all. As it is you can
easily avoid it but you need to keep your wits about you. So in here we have this wonderfully
high ceiling and you can walk around two sides of the bed so that means it's easier to make the bed
than your traditional tiny house loft. This is actually a double bed. You could fit a queen
bed in here but you wouldn't have room for this great little side table which is really nice to
have at night if you're reading and you have a cup of water. So I'm in favor of the double bed choice
and just over here is the closet area where they've put in this nice tall dresser
and if you have hanging clothes they've supplied hangers where you can use these fold down hanger
holders. That's what they're called. So that you can hang up your clothes maybe what you're going
to wear for the next day like to lay out your outfit or to store clothes and these actually
can hold several hangers that you can then fold up like this so it's a really great small space
space saver. I really like this cute jewelry hanger over here. It's a wall mounted jewelry
organizer but it's also really cute and why not display your pretty things. So they've utilized
the vertical space here by adding some open shelves however one shelf mostly houses a little
tv and to comfortably view a movie you just want to put these pillows against the wall
so you have a better angle. It's not my cup of tea to watch movies in bed. I'd rather do it
downstairs but you do you. And just over here is the ladder for the lounge loft. It could also be
used for storage but right now it's a perfect spot to cozy up with a good book. It also houses the
second mini split unit which provides heating and cooling for the rest of the house and I really
appreciate that the owners installed a wall mounted fan which really helps dramatically with
air circulation. And directly across the way is the loft bedroom that's tall enough to easily sit
up in bed and you access it by going up a really sturdy ladder. What I really appreciate about the
ladder is that you can put your entire foot on the step flat so it feels much more secure than going
up a regular ladder. So this is a pretty small bathroom in a tiny house you know as you can see
it's less you know maybe five feet across four and a half something like that but it has everything
it needs. It even has a washer dryer combo inside of it so it is packed full in here for sure.
One thing I think is really nice in here is this shower. I just really like the tiles because it's
like the faux wood grain and I like the color of them and everything even the river rocks that are
on the bottom you can feel the texture of them on your feet when you're in the shower which is
pretty cool. I think it's like 32 by 32 so I do think that that is about the smallest shower that
you should have in a tiny house because anything smaller than that you'd be like this trying to
wash your hair and you'd have to bring your knees up to wash your feet you know it'd be really
strange so I think that's probably the small size I would do. Because of the size of the shower
there's a little extra space behind the shower that they've turned into storage space and every
inch counts in a tiny house so this is a really good use of the space. It's a great spot to keep
towels toiletries and even a small broom. Do you like to juggle in your home office? Neither do I.
That's why I need an L-shaped standing desk. Editing for our YouTube channel requires a lot
of stuff. A laptop, a monitor, a couple of hard drives, a bunch of snacks, so an L is ideal. Also
sitting for hours editing can take a real toll on this body. That's why I'm excited about the Flexi
Spot E7L standing desk. It gives me the flexibility I need to create my ideal workspace and I can move
around whenever I want and keep my body feeling good. It's super easy to use. Enter presets based
on your preferred setups and boom you're ready to go. It's incredibly sturdy and stable with legs
made out of thick automotive grade steel. No wobbling as it lifts or lowers. This bad boy can
hold up to 330 pounds so load it up with whatever. Want to enjoy the benefits of an L-shaped standing
desk at a reasonable price? Well try out the E7L today. Free returns within 30 days and comes with
a 15-year warranty. Use our code for $50 off your E7L standing desk. And in the center of the house
is the kitchen and it's a galley style kitchen which is great. Our tiny house is a galley style
but it's kind of short. It's a small kitchen but when it's this long I kind of find myself shuffling
like left to right because I need something over here or I need to go over here
and to me that's a little inconvenient but it's not the worst thing in the world.
It's kind of personal preference. Yeah. As you guys know I'm a huge fan of being able to pivot
and you can do a little bit of that but a really good pivot is like almost three directions of
reaching for things. Yeah like if the fridge was over here. But the little bit of shape that's here
does help it feel like more of a separate room and I like that it's a little bit more defined.
A must-have for us in a tiny house kitchen is a big sink especially because there's no dishwasher
in here and this baby is definitely deep enough to hold a couple pots and pans and that's the
size it should be. Any smaller than this? Too small. Too small. And they have an apartment size fridge
which is great but the only thing that sucks about it is the doors are on the wrong way so
it doesn't open into the kitchen it opens into the living room but the Airbnb owners know this
and looked into flipping the doors already but apparently it's a model that you can't flip the
doors. I've never heard of such a thing but you can't. I looked at it. So think about that if
you're purchasing a new refrigerator for your kitchen make sure the door opens the right way.
Yeah and that's even more important in a small space because if it opens the wrong way that can
actually interfere with other functions. Totally. And the last place to show you guys is the living
room and it's right here. Well I really love this little living room. Yeah. It's adorable and cozy
and also super functional especially with this bar seating you can sit here enjoy a meal work
on your laptop and enjoy the beautiful views of Oconee Bell. And one of the things Alexis and I
always talk about about Airbnbs are the sofa. It's got to have a sofa and it's got to be
comfortable and this one's great because it's got springs so it's absolutely comfortable. And
hard to find because something that fits in what is it it is literally like six foot three
in that space it's very small. But I think you could lie down and take a nap on that could you
not? I might be able to. Oh yeah I could totally do that. But what makes it good for
lounging for two people is that they included this really cute storage ottoman which of course great
place to store things like blankets or games but you can also put your feet up. And that
is the epitome of comfort am i right? And something else that most living rooms have
are a television and this one is mounted up here on the wall just underneath the steps to the loft
and it's not too high for viewing and it also pulls out on a little arm so you can get it just
a little bit closer to you. So as you can see this is a great tiny house it's perfect as an Airbnb
and I think pretty comfortable as is as a full-time home. But there are some ways you
can optimize this space to make it even better for full-time living. Here in the living room I
have a few ideas really just minor tweaks for how to make this room even better and one of them is
this fantastic bar height table here and that would be to make it a little bit bigger a little
bit deeper and that would be easier for putting you know full-size plates for dinner time or even
having a little bit more room to have like a mouse next to your laptop or something like that.
By making it wider it's definitely going to stick out further into the living room and eat up some
of this great open space. So I think the best thing to do would be to make it a fold-up bar
table and if you did that you'd probably want to exchange these great stools for foldable stools
that can be hung up on the wall and tucked out of the way when it's not in use. A couple other
tiny things. One would be adding storage to the sofa. So it's a very comfortable little sofa it's
not a storage sofa and that's all right because storage sofas sometimes can be a little uncomfortable
but it doesn't have to be. Instead you can find these great short baskets that will slide right
under the sofa and give you valuable storage for things like linens. I don't know about you but I
really enjoy cozying up on the sofa but sometimes that coffee table is kind of far away for setting
down your coffee mug. You know what I mean? So a couple ideas to make that a little bit more
convenient would be one a small fold-down shelf on the wall that could be used for a cup holder.
Two a c-shaped side table that you can nest with the sofa so it's out of the way. And three
if you wanted to get a different ottoman there are those that have a top that pull up.
One of the most important things when it comes to full-time living in a tiny home
is having enough storage and I think this house could use a little bit more closet space
and a really great spot to add a coat closet would be under the ladder to the bedroom loft.
Right now you can see through the ladder which helps the whole space feel more open
so it would take that away so you just have to weigh what's most important to you.
Do you want that open feeling or do you want a place to put a few more things? But at night time
it would be nice to have something other than just the overhead lighting. Now you could add a dimmer
switch so dimming these lights that could be nice but you could also add a hanging lamp or a wall
sconce for a softer warm light in the evening. The great thing about this tiny kitchen is that there's
lots of cabinets and lots of storage space without it feeling super tight. However because they went
with a full size range it's taken away from available counter space so an easy way to create
a little bit more workspace is to get a cover that you can set on top of the sink and voila
you have just a little bit more counter to work with. There are a few minor additions that I think
would add a lot more convenience while you're cooking and one of them is a spice rack. I personally
love to easily see and grab spices while I'm cooking and I think that there are two spots
where you could do that. One would be above the stovetop here and the other would be on the wall
that's on the side of the fridge. There's one thing in this kitchen that I think is really charming
and kind of funny. It's a very tiny house kind of thing and that's this drawer. The builder
saw this leftover space that was just a few inches wide and he thought that should be a drawer
which two thumbs up. Yes that is the kind of attitude you need to have when you're designing a
tiny home. So this is great for storing you know junk drawer items like scissors. Another quirky
thing that I would update are these cabinet doors over here. So you see these two small doors
they actually open up to access the same larger cabinet but the issue is if you're trying to pull
out a big pot or put a big pot in you have to get it through this tiny compartment. Why not just one
big door? It's the little things that really count. One area that could be improved in here is the
fridge cabinet. I love that it is lifted off the ground because that means you can have easier
access into the fridge you know from standing height. However there's a little bit of wasted
space so if you were to rebuild this cabinet you could push the fridge to this side and with that
extra inch and a half that you would gain it would make the perfect size for one of those handy dandy
pull-out pantries. One thing I want to point out is the open space above these cabinets. It seems
like prime storage space right? Well yes and no. It is available space be great for a couple plants
maybe some pretty mixing bowls but you need to be careful not to put too much weight up there
because these are wall-mounted cabinets and they're only as strong as whatever's holding it
so if you overdo it it could make the whole thing unstable. Here in the entryway it's already set up
very functionally but for two people living in this tiny home you might have several pairs of
shoes maybe even a dozen so more shoe storage is always a good idea and that's one thing that can
be nice to tuck away to be less visible and that's why I think this is a great opportunity to add in
a shoe cabinet here. You might have seen those Ikea trones that have the tilt out compartments
where you can slide your shoes in those are in a few different tiny houses there's also all kinds
of really adorable shoe cabinets out there now but depending on the dimensions you might also
want to do something custom. You might have noticed this really cute window film here in the front
door so this is an area where you might want a little bit of privacy and instead of adding blinds
or curtains window film is a great decorative touch this would also be great for a bathroom
window. The last thing here I would say is add more hooks because you can never have too many
there are a few cute hooks right here but why not a second tier of hooks to accommodate more jackets
so while having all your coats here does eat into the hallway space a little bit I think there's
still plenty of room to get by without any problems but if you're someone who doesn't like
the maybe cluttered look of all your jackets here that's where that coat closet idea I had
behind the steps over here would be handy. So in the bathroom there's definitely a few things you
could do to improve it just for full-time living you know adding more storage one big thing Alexis
loves this is the medicine cabinet so you could do all different kinds of medicine cabinets here
you could do one that's just the same size as this mirror or a little bit taller that would work you
know you'd get the depth in here or you could take down these shelves and do a big one do like a
really big one if you don't want to do that you could actually just add one or two more shelves
here make them a little bit deeper and you get tons of storage that way. In the shower something
simple is you know it has a little place to put stuff built into the wall maybe one of those like
pole caddies that goes in the corner that has a couple of shelves on it that could be real useful
in there. And then there's the space behind the shower so here you could do a couple of different
things but I really like the idea of building a it's almost like a pullout pantry so our friend
Christo has one in his kitchen that's at least this tall that has his vacuum his broom and
handfuls of other stuff so that would be really awesome here and it could just pull right out
and it would make it so you could get to the things in the very back and if that was a little
bit too much you could build one just on the top just so you could get all the items that you need
to from far back. Out here in the hallway we have these steps and this is dying for more storage so
at the bottom here you see there is one step that has some storage underneath it but that whole
thing has to slide all the way out to access it which is a little bit of a pain so maybe even
rebuilding these steps so each one of them has a different depth of storage in it that's just a
drawer a drawer is always easy to do that pulls out that has all of the things that you might need
in it. So there's several things you can do in the bedroom up here to optimize the space and one of
is a closet in this space right here so you know those closets that have like rods and shelves that
you can move around that could totally be filled up right here and you could even put a door here
if you wanted it would probably have to slide back and forth but it could almost slide from here to
go across and cover here so you can have a little bit privacy if you have someone else living with
you and if you don't want to spend a ton of money on like that closet system that could go in here
you could put a handful of shelves in here and then put stuff in baskets so you would just have
to slide it out and get the stuff out from the top so that is definitely a budget-friendly option.
A couple other things that I think are cool are that with this bed this double bed you could put
some storage underneath it so it's basically jacking the bed up you know a foot or two you
could purchase a bed frame that had a storage in it already or you could make it and create storage
or even have it on hydraulics so it comes up and then the hole underneath you can access.
Another good way to use this room as flex space is to get a murphy bed. Now it would be one of
those murphy beds that goes up on its side as opposed to up on its end it could work in this
room as long as it can fit underneath this mini split but you can buy murphy beds that have a
desk attached to the bottom of it so when it folds up the desk folds out and you can have that space
to use as a working desk and then you have this whole space to use for other things like exercising
and the last space is this little side loft so you could use that in a couple of different ways
but a really efficient way is to create more storage. There's all kinds of storage cubes and
baskets that you can get from places like Ikea but you just really want to make sure that they look
good from the kitchen and living room area. You can also do a little like border up there if you
look like a bookcase that's maybe a foot or two tall and put it up against the railing so then
you can't really see up into there you just got to make sure that the back side of those bookcases
looks nice. Well what would you do in this tiny house to make it work for you as a full-time home?
