Scene from Act III: Tell's Arrest and Gesler's Curse
In this pivotal moment from Guillaume Tell, Gesler, the tyrannical ruler, discovers that Tell has a second arrow intended for him, should anything happen to Tell's son, Jemmy. Upon this revelation, Gesler orders the arrest of both Tell and his son. In a courageous act of defiance, Mathilde steps forward to protect child. Meanwhile, the Swiss people rise in anger, cursing Gesler for his cruelty in the powerful chorus "Anatheme à Gesler" ("Gesler is cursed forever"). This scene marks a key turning point in the opera, as the themes of resistance and personal sacrifice come to the forefront.
