Synopsis:
"I advised my brother Josef – in order to secure the St. Petersburg engagement (I've already been there ten times and earned a lot of money) – to compose something that would be a hit in St. Petersburg and suggested he write a pizzicato polka. He didn't want to do it – he was always undecided – finally, I suggested that the polka should be created by both of us. He agreed, and lo and behold – the polka caused a sensation in the truest sense of the word." This is how Johann Strauss recalled the creation of the Pizzicato Polka in a letter to his publisher Simrock dated April 1, 1892.
On June 1, 1869 [= June 13 according to the Gregorian calendar], Jetty Strauss, who had traveled with him to Pavlovsk, informed Josef's wife Caroline in Vienna: "Pepi & Jean are now writing a polka together – that will be something new again." The autograph of the joint composition has been lost. Existing sources do not allow us to determine either brother's contribution to the composition.
The premiere took place at the Vauxhall in Pavlovsk near St. Petersburg at a musical evening on June 12 [= 24], 1869. Six performances and two repeats testify to the enthusiasm of the Russian audience.
The first Viennese performance took place on November 14, 1869, in the Sofiensaal, with Johann conducting the Strauss Orchestra at a promenade concert by the three Strauss brothers. It was the first performance of Johann and Josef after their return from St. Petersburg. The announcement in the "Fremdenblatt" of November 13, "performed only by the quartet," and a report in the "Zeitgeist" seven days later, "performed with precision by the quartet," document the instrumentation of the first version. The Pizzicato Polka has also been released for a large orchestra – with a new string section – where the wind instruments not only play the tutti chord at the beginning and end, but are integrated into the entire orchestration. Text: Prof. Norbert Rubey
