This Abandoned Asylum for the Criminally Insane in New York is on the grounds of an active prison and the property is peppered with active buildings mixed in with many very old derelict and crumbling abandoned buildings.
Many of the patients admitted to this now abandoned insane asylum died there and were buried in graves marked not with names, but by numbers. In 2012 I took a day long road trip with this abandoned asylum on my list of places to visit. I had no idea what to expect when I got here or what to look for once I made the over 4 hour drive.
This abandoned asylum, which opened in the last quarter of the 1800’s was setup to provide better treatment for those who were unable to care for them self.
Rather than being locked away in squalid conditions in an almshouse, this facility promised better care for those who could not “fit in” to every day society. Like all asylums, significant budget cuts lead to overcrowding & deplorable treatment of patients. Then, after a expose in the 1970’s by Geraldo Riveria, the wheels were set in motion to start the closing of this & all other facilities.
Today this particular building along with several on the grounds have been left to rot with significant structural damage. Although the history of this place is quite sad, the building itself was at one time quite beautiful & it’s sad that is now beyond repair.

okay guys what's up it's urbex Dave also
known as photography we're inside an
abandoned mental hospital and I was here
in 2012 but I didn't get into this
building here so we just got in we're
just about to start our explore so uh
let's see what happens
[ __ ] that's amazing big [ __ ] on the
floor I said big [ __ ]
[Music]
yeah okay guys I think we're on the top
floor right now and I'm stepping very
very gently up here because it is really
soft of you okay right dead center from
the very top floor
[Music]
so I'm going very very slow and walking
very light
nice and slow so you can see the all the
rooms hallway nice and easy
here's the main main windows right dead
center dan nice and light in here easy
Hey look at that the bathroom tub little
sink toilet
alright okay guys we've officially
walked on the most unsafe part of this
building so far so good
hope you've liked it so far I got to dig
through the pictures
there's uvj hope it doesn't fall through
the floor while we're sitting here but
uh so far so good we haven't done it yet
but we're happy he's happy I'm happy
I hope you're happy it's really nice
what's up guys so far so good
you haven't fallen through the floor
we're back on the main level we've got a
lot of good night thanks to this
collapsed ceiling we've got some kind of
a a bet here
people who follow my stuff might know
what kind of bed that is or what to call
it
I got no idea but it's pretty cool we
got a collapsed ceiling roof over there
we got rhythm rider right there he's
gonna start talking in a minute -
where's the place and then we got this
hallway here long door there's a bed
there's a hospital bed and then in here
we've got all kinds of couches and
chairs look at that
it's got I got rocking chair you got
chairs on wheels you got couches if it
wouldn't make so much damn noise I'd
take some of these out and set up some
shots but I would make I'm massing them
big noise so anyways this looks like an
activity room for little kids a low
table
you got low doors and this little
construction table here for kids to play
in so that's what that looks like okay
back to taking pictures and I'll be back
with some more video in a minute okay
guys
so uh I'm in this big room still in the
abandoned mental hospital it's in here
we got a whole bunch of hospital beds
all just lined up in here like a little
bit of curtain still hanging on for dear
life over there some more beds here and
then over here we got our way over to
the other wing so we still have a whole
other wing to explore over there and we
still have an upstairs to see so you
guys are liking this place I think I
might have said that a few times but I
hope you're liking this as much as I am
this is one of our favorite kind of
places for these dark mental asylums and
lots of decay lots of cool colors lots
of textures and some really cool stuff
so I hope you guys are liking this as
much as I am like it takes more guys I'm
gonna move on to the other way
and we're gonna do this together
[Music]
headboards holy [ __ ] this site looks
rough the bus doesn't matter got my
flashlight here so you got some bedhead
boards are all the same there's a bed
right there
doesn't look pretty comfortable if you
ask me well that's really cool there's
the bed frames
another upstairs oh my god this place
never ends
oh yes
nice this is a nice room make a lot of
noise so there you go this is the entire
main floor now I got some pictures to
take and I'll come back when I'm done
okay guys we're gonna see what is up
guys down and this is we're gonna go
walk let's go see what's up guys okay
this floor looks like every other floor
okay doesn't make it any less awesome I
think I'm gonna like this room with all
the light oh this is nice whoa this Wow
open-concept Hey
okay I got some pictures to take
all right we're gonna make our way from
this hallway and we're gonna go into
this building right here this little
breezeway here if that's what that's
actually called some nice colors there's
pieces of ceiling over here oh yeah it
was a record player in here and these
are nice rooms there's two record
players
looks like a film machine we're on your
film through it it's a projector it's a
projector this if those were originally
in here then this would have been like a
music and entertainment this is a nice
room Wow then once we're done in this
room we're gonna move this way and I
think I really like this hallway right
here Wow some of them are just so much
nicer than the others even though
they're all the same blinds are still on
the curtain on the win another record
player in there
oh this is nice tattered blinds the
hell's that looks like it's brand-new
that's weird
now the floor up here is surprisingly
well preserved compared to the other
floors okay guys I gotta do some
shooting here there's lots to take
pictures of up here so I'll back
okay guys what is up I'm urbex Dave I'm
free toffee there he is or bestie good
rider here we are behind me is the
abandoned mental asylum that we just
explored we just destroyed it this is
our second time here both came here in
2012 explored a different building than
this one come back now six years later
finally got into this one that we didn't
get into last time this was an amazing
amazing explore big ugly messy insane
asylum dates back I don't know how many
years I'll put some history in the video
but I think you guys are going to like
it I hope you guys liked it let's take a
look all the way and here it is all the
way across dead center
if that doesn't scream creepy insane
asylum I don't know what does all the
way over there
again I'm MX dave freaked ography rhythm
riders over there all the links are
gonna be down below hope you guys have
liked this one smash the like button
