SpaceX revealed NEW Upgrade for Starship Pad B Shocked the entire Industry...
When it comes to SpaceX launches, Starship is always the star of the show. It’s massive, it’s ambitious and it grabs all the headlines. But here’s the thing: while everyone’s eyes are on the rocket, few people realize there’s an entire world of cutting-edge engineering happening right underneath it. And trust me it’s just as epic.
Right now, one of the most impressive projects at Starbase is the brand-new double flame trench system being built at Pad B.
It’s a bold, innovative piece of infrastructure and it features some unique design elements, unlike anything we’ve seen before.
Let’s break it all down, right here in today’s episode of Alpha Tech!
SpaceX revealed NEW Upgrade for Starship Pad B Shocked the entire Industry...
After months of focusing on building an entirely new structure for Pad B, we now have a much clearer look at this flame trench project. From what we’ve observed, SpaceX’s progress currently sits at around 80% completion of the main frame for the trench. Five supports for the flame diverter have been set into place, followed by two massive flame buckets. Alongside those are smaller components, like several water pipes and distribution lines that will supply both sides of the flame trench. These will connect to the existing water outflow pipes, which currently end beside the tower, running through the sheet pile wall, an open gap, and then through the trench’s steel walls to supply both distribution lines beneath the trench’s overhang.

It’s genuinely fascinating to see the internal workings of a structure like this before it’s fully completed—especially since once it’s finished, the exterior tends to look much simpler than what’s going on inside.
With rapid assembly moving ahead, this massive project is expected to be completed in about two months, and Pad B will officially be brought online for Starship launches by the end of 2025.
As this development unfolds, many people have also started to wonder what the future holds for Launch Pad A—the site that’s been through countless ups and downs with Starship. After Starship’s very first launch, SpaceX’s one-of-a-kind launch pad was nearly obliterated, an unforgettable image that marked a turning point and sparked major upgrades. Although the current donut-shaped launch mount has performed better since then thanks to a steel plate mat and a water deluge system beneath it, it’s still not seen as a long-term solution. That’s precisely why the flame trench at Pad B is rising as a star option, and once it’s operational, Pad A is widely expected to undergo changes to keep up with Starship’s future high-cadence flight schedule.
