Disaster! China even Copied NASA's James Webb telescope after Clone SpaceX Rocket...
Imitation, Mimicry… downright copying! This ain’t new when it comes to China.
In the aerospace field, they are well-known for replicating powerful rockets and systems, particularly those from the U.S., with SpaceX being a frequent source of inspiration.
But this time, they’ve set their sights on something even more ambitious. In a surprising move, China has announced plans to develop a telescope system strikingly similar to the James Webb Space Telescope.
A bold new ambition is taking shape.
So, what does this James Webb copycat look like? Is there anything unique about it? And most importantly, can they succeed?
Let’s find out in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.

China has been making significant strides in space exploration in recent years. While state-owned organizations continue to drive much of the country’s progress, the private sector has also emerged, often employing a strategy of replication. Now, China appears to be applying this approach to one of the most advanced space telescopes ever built: the James Webb Space Telescope.
Despite being in operation for only a few years, the James Webb telescope has already revolutionized our understanding of the universe. With its advanced infrared technology, it has provided breathtaking images of planets, asteroids, galaxies, black holes, and star systems, solidifying its role as NASA’s and the United States' pioneering eye in space exploration. Now, China has unveiled plans for a telescope that bears a striking resemblance to James Webb, combining its advancements in space technology with a replication strategy that has defined much of its recent aerospace developments.

On its official X page, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) recently released images of its upcoming space telescope. While it has not been officially named, the image labels it as "OAST," which likely stands for Orbital Assembly Space Telescope. This name suggests a key difference from James Webb—its method of construction.
Visually, OAST closely resembles James Webb. Its primary mirror is composed of multiple small, golden hexagonal mirrors arranged in a honeycomb-like structure. It is also mounted on a large sunshield, similar to James Webb, which serves to protect its sensitive instruments from the Sun’s heat. The sunshield appears to have integrated solar panels to power the telescope, along with other essential systems such as antennas, star trackers, and thermal controls.
