Marikina City — Let's skip the tiny house tour for now and see some tropical architecture and design in a not so tiny home.
Welcome to another episode of Unique Homes...
This modern tropical house in the city doesn't only respond to the kind of atmosphere the Philippines has. With its rustic charm, modern amenities and nature-loving outdoors this villa-style abode also achieves an undeniably enviable aesthetic. (But say 'no' to the envy part. Choose to be inspired.) And what's modernism without a lot of functionality and seamless indoor-outdoor connections?
Take the tour with homeowner and its architect John and see the stylish materials and details that made this modern tropical home a reality.
Hello OG! Welcome to our modern tropical house in the city.
Come on, let's go inside.
And upon entering, this is our house in front of the house.
So this is my sister-in-law, my nephew Tommy, and my mom.
We usually relax here.
So if you can see, we put a Kalachuchi tree to have shade here in the house.
And you can see the pond.
Every time we hear the water, it gives a refreshing feel to the house.
And this is the table in the middle.
Actually, it's a mango tree trunk.
So the client just gave it to me.
He said he's going to throw it away.
So I also made a table for it to be my focal point in this area.
The dream of building this house started actually when my mom told me one day
that the houses you're designing and building are beautiful.
I hope that one day, your dad will also experience living in a house like that.
So that's where the dream for them started.
And I told myself that the house I'm going to build for them
is a retirement house that they can enjoy for the rest of their lives.
Before we go inside, this is our garage.
So two cars can fit in here.
And as you can see, the roof that I used in the garage is a solid polycarbonate roofing.
So its purpose is to light up our dining area inside.
As you can see, I used cladding like stone tiles.
And these slots are made of steel.
So that I can achieve the villa feels here outside the house.
Okay, we've seen the outside area.
Let's go inside.
So we're here in our living area.
Our design here in the living area is a high ceiling.
Because that's what we were deprived of in our old house.
So here, you can see our side garden.
That's my favorite plant, guys.
So it's called Thai Constellation.
We also put a sliding door here.
Because its purpose is actually cross ventilation.
Because the prevailing wind is coming from here.
So we also have another sliding door in the dining area.
You'll see it later.
So that's where our natural air passes through.
Our chandelier, it's actually a local supplier.
So this one became the centerpiece here in the living area.
Because the design is very unique.
I got the inspiration for this house from the style of architecture that I'm promoting.
Which is tropical architecture.
I said, I want this house to somehow be like a villa, like a resort.
Where you're in the city, but you feel like you're in the province.
Because there are a lot of plants.
And at the same time, promoting the natural lighting and ventilation in the house.
As you can see, our planning here in the house is what we call open plan.
So our living area, dining area, and show kitchen are connected.
So that the house looks spacious.
So I also like to collect paintings.
So this painting is by Nel Campos.
So here, you will notice the sliding door that connects to the garage.
So sometimes when we have guests at night, we open this sliding to connect to our dining area.
I also put what we call clerestory windows.
So that's what you'll see on top of the dining and living area.
The purpose of that is during the summer, when it's too hot.
We open our clerestory windows.
So that we can get rid of the hot air that builds up on the ceiling.
This is our main kitchen or our clean kitchen.
You will notice that the main highlight is my dad's collection.
His drinks.
So it's very symbolic because he arranged this.
And we also used induction cooking in the clean kitchen.
Since heavy cooking doesn't happen here.
It's just hot.
For the material, for the top, we used granite.
And then for the backsplash, porcelain tile.
For this part, we hid our water dispenser inside the cabinet.
So as you can see, so that it doesn't look ugly.
And at the same time, our refrigerator is black.
Because I dyed it to the color of our cabinets in the kitchen.
Come, let's go to the dirty kitchen.
So we're here in the dirty kitchen.
So in the dirty kitchen, the color I used is light color.
Since the light is limited here in this part.
Because we climbed on the firewall.
I put a solid wood countertop here.
So that the preparation area is here.
Since the space is limited.
So here, you will notice the same in the main kitchen.
I used porcelain tiles for the backsplash.
And then granite here on the countertop.
This is our laundry area.
So we invested in a washer that also has a dryer.
Because the space is limited.
This is our drying area.
And at the same time, storage.
So you will notice what I used for the roof here in the drying area.
I used solid polycarbonate roofing.
The purpose of this is so that we can still dry our clothes even if it rains.
And this is our storage cabinet up to the ceiling.
This project is very special to me.
Because my client here is my parents and my family.
The most memorable moment that I experienced with my family here in this house.
Is when we celebrated my dad's birthday.
At the same time, that's also the blessing of the house.
But unfortunately, after three months.
My dad passed away because of a heart attack.
I'm still thankful because even if that happened.
He still experienced his dream of having a house.
Maybe the pros is, I already know what the needs of the family are.
Cons in building the house.
Maybe because you want to do a lot.
Sometimes, I prioritize it because the property is small.
So this is the area that leads to the rooms.
So here, this is our altar.
And of course, my dad.
His picture is here.
We decided as a family to put it here.
So that we can always remember him.
And I know that he is very proud of all of us.
And here, as we go along.
We put our family pictures here.
We were with our dad.
These are our memorable moments with him.
So this is the blessing of our house.
This is my brother's wedding.
And this is our first family picture together.
This door is our common bathroom.
As you can see.
We used stone tiles here.
The ones on the wall and on the floor.
So that it looks tropical.
I bought this property last pandemic.
It's actually an old house.
But eventually, we demolished everything.
The lot size is around 240 square meters.
And the floor area is 150 square meters.
Mostly, I used sustainable materials in building the house.
I used PVC ceiling for the exterior.
I also used driftwood inside the house.
So that I can refurbish the wooden floors.
And make use of it to make the interior look better.
At the same time, I also used materials that I know will last for a long time.
Even the cabinets are made of marine plywood.
So that it won't absorb moisture.
And all the areas, as much as possible.
Are made of tiles that will last for a long time.
Let's go to the first bedroom.
This is my sister's bedroom.
As you can see, it has a different vibe.
I made it colorful.
The room is small but functional.
The second bedroom is my brother's family's bedroom.
It's a bit bigger than my sister's bedroom.
Because they're family.
And last but not the least, let's go to the master's bedroom.
In the master's bedroom, my mom has her own bathroom.
This is her bathroom.
Same concept.
We used tongue tiles inside.
This is her bed.
On top of her bed,
I put an art piece.
It has indirect lighting.
And then this one,
This is her wardrobe cabinet.
I made it tinted glass.
So that it looks spacious.
In this part,
She has a reclining chair.
So that when she wants to get wet,
She has light and spotlights.
The total amount
that we spent here in the house
is 4.8 million.
But of course,
we were happy to buy appliances,
furniture,
things to put in the house.
So we added 5.6 million all in all.
The advice that I can give
to all the kids
who want to
give back
to their parents,
is that it doesn't matter
how much you give back
to your parents,
as long as it comes from
your heart, that's what's important.
Welcome to our
secret garden.
This area is where my mom
meditates.
This is where she zooms in
with her churchmates.
On this side,
this is the side garden
that has a view of the bedrooms.
Here, you'll notice
that the grass
that we used
is actually fake grass.
The advantage of this is that it's easy maintenance.
You don't have to water it.
At the same time,
when it rains,
the grass will go straight to the ground.
Thank you for joining me
on this tour of our
modern tropical house in the city.
To all the kids
who want to give back to their parents,
go guys! Give your best
to your parents because
we won't be able to keep them here forever.
That's it! Thank you very much
and goodbye!
