It is finally here, the world's largest and most modern museum.
And of course I'm talking about the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
It has been in development for almost 22 years to get to the point we're at today.
This video was filmed in November 2024 at the beginning of the soft opening of the museum.
And throughout this video you'll get to see some of the galleries the museum has to offer.
So for those of you that have been to the old Cairo museum, well, this is very, very different.
As soon as you walk in, you're met with a large open air-conditioned space,
which of course is very modern, except for the museum itself.
And slightly off-subject of the video, when you do visit the museum,
be careful around the Ramesses statue that you just saw.
I can't tell you how many people I saw fall into the water that's surrounding them,
to the point where there was a lady there with a mop bucket,
whose job was to just mop up those who were falling into the water.
So be careful.
Anyway, back to the museum.
So after you enter the hall, you'll be met with the Grand Staircase, which you see here.
You can either choose to walk up it, or take the escalator.
There is also good disabled access, with lifts taking you all the way up.
I would highly recommend that you walk up the Grand Staircase to really enjoy it.
And when you reach the end, you'll be met with this amazing view.
Now, the museum itself is split into several sections,
with the main galleries consisting of 12 different galleries.
The galleries are provided up in society, kinship, and beliefs.
And you can choose to either do them in order, or just walk up and down the corridors.
But just bear in mind that as well as those categories, they are split into time periods.
I highly recommend that you do them in order to stay within the timescale.
Now, how much does it cost, and how do you get a ticket?
If you're not Egyptian, or Arab, then you're looking to pay around $12 for an adult ticket.
But, because this is a modern museum, you can actually get it online for a good price.
When you go on the website to pick up your ticket, you'll have a choice between just purchasing a ticket, or a guided tour ticket.
The guided tour ticket, of course, will cost you a little bit more.
And once you've purchased them, you'll simply be emailed your QR codes, and you're sent to the museum.
However, if you don't have access online, you can just purchase them on a line book.
But I do recommend pre-booking them.
Anyway, let's get back to the museum itself.
So the museum itself contains around 100,000 artifacts, of which 15,000 are on display.
And many of them have not been shown to the public before.
And they're a mixture of the traditional displays, and these very modern digital ones that you see here.
At the time of filming this video, in November of 2024, as I mentioned at the beginning, it was still a stock building.
Meaning the museum itself wasn't entirely open yet.
Although the 12 galleries were.
But the latest information I read said that in February 2025, the museum would fully open.
I believe that there were two sections that were still closed when I was there.
One being Treasures of Tutankhamen.
The museum promises to display all 5,000 of the artifacts found in its tomb.
Which as far as I know, has never happened before.
It's had them all in one place.
The other gallery that was still closed was the Solar Boat Display of Ndufu.
And if you don't know what that is, I'd better say it's a very large boat that was found buried next to the Great Pyramid.
It used to be on display next to the Great Pyramid, but it was removed from this museum.
There was also a children's museum, which was halfway up the Grand Gallery.
And I saw it from the right-hand side.
And of course, there were plenty of coffee shops and dish shops within the museum itself.
Because I promise you, by the time you finish exploring this museum, you're going to want to sit down.
Now I spoke about the things that are available to you as the public.
There are other parts of this museum that aren't available to the public.
For example, there are two laboratories, which are some of the largest and most modern in the world, specializing in preservation and restoration.
And of course, this $1 billion project, which is the Grand Fujian Museum, is all part of the museum's efforts to modernize and preserve its history.
Now of course the question you're probably thinking is, why visit the Grand Fujian Museum?
Is it still worth visiting the old museum in Cairo?
My answer to that would be yes.
You should visit them both.
Although the Grand Fujian Museum is amazing and modern and very, very cool, the old Fujian Museum is still part of Egypt's history itself.
Perhaps sparking the interest in Egyptology to the public right from the beginning.
Now how long will it take you to explore this museum?
And considering I just explored the Grand Staircase and the 12 galleries, I was there for almost three hours.
But that is me.
Of course, some of you might be able to do it much quicker if you are unguided.
But I do recommend that you take the time to explore this museum properly.
And of course, I am planning to return to the museum once it is fully open, hopefully in February 2025.
Because I can't wait to see all the treasures that are behind that wall.
And don't worry, if you can't go, I shall be hopefully making a video about it for you to experience it too.
I hope you enjoyed this quick guide and tour of the Grand Fujian Museum.
Please don't forget to subscribe if you enjoyed it.
And I look forward to making some more videos about some of the artefacts in this museum.
And hopefully the entire museum once it is open.
