Romanticism is born in XIX century. It is about the manifestation of feelings and sensations through art. It began in literature by the ideas of Goethe, Rousseau and Hegel. Ideals as revolution, nationalism, freedom, independence are the pillars of the romantic thinking. Historicism, coming back to the old forms, but reinterpreting it. Dramatic emotions, the sublime and ruins. Nostalgia for the past.

Painting was very developed in Romanticism. Great imagination, theme of the Middle Ages, legends from the north and national legends. Exotism, ruins, sublime landscapes, monsters, fantasy, dramatism are some of the characteristics.

Scandinavia: artists here made many paintings of norse mythology and also landscape paintings.

Nicolai Abildgaard: he is known as the Raphael of the North, he made neoclassicism popular in Denmark. Philoctetes, Ymer suckling the cow Audhumbla

Johan Gustaf Sandberg: he did historic and mythological painting. He painted frescoes in the Uppsala cathedral that show king Gustav Vasa (2 paintings), Valkyries

Nils Blommér: Freyja, Meadow elves, Water-sprite and the Ægir’s Daughters
Carl Peter Lehmann: Frithjof slaying two trolls in the sea

Knud Baade: one of the greatest painters in norway. Dramatic contrast. Heimdall summoning to the gods to battle, Prophecy of Vala, Scene of the Era of Norwegian Sagas, Træna Island in Nordland, Hestmona, Stormy night, Stavkirke of Borgund, Kunstakademie of Copenhaguen

Mårten Eskil Winge: Thor in battle against the giants, Punishment of Loki, Kraka

Peter Nicolai Arbo: other of the greatest painters, specialized in historic and mythological themes. Dagr, Åsgårdsreien (2 paintings), Death of Hervors, Ingeborg, Valkyrie (2 paintings)

Georg Pauli: Bather men (curious, always women but he did men!), Óðinn with the corpse of Mímir

Lorenz Frølich: illustrator, he made engravings of mythological episodes. Battle of Grathe Heath, Odin, Frigg and Gersemi, Valkyries

William Gershom Collingwood: he is an english author, but interesting to mention here because he illustrated episodes of the Eddas. Grímnismál, Alvíssmál, Vafþrúðnismál (2), Hymiskvíða, Skírnismál, Baldr's Draumr

Romantic nationalism: it was a movement that made popular the representation of the norwegian nature and nacional identity. Mostly landscapes with ships and normal people
