Lecture 5 focuses on the female gaze -- with women as both patrons and artists -- during the age of Marie Antoinette, primarily. Another underlying theme in the video is the chronological progression of Neoclassicism during the 1770s.
The video starts with the artistic choices of Madame du Barry (King Louis XV's mistress) as patron; discusses Marie Antoinette's arrival in France and accession to the throne as wife of Louis XVI; further brings Marie-Antoinette to life through a look at her portraits, her role as "fashion icon," and her patronage of newly conceived outdoor spaces (at Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet, particularly); and finally, touches on new ideas about breastfeeding. The female artists who have the spotlight in this lecture -- and who fulfilled commissions for both Du Barry and Marie-Anoinette -- include Vigée-Lebrun and Labille-Guiard.
