SpaceX's Solution to Solve RVac Engine Problem!
It is no exaggeration to say that Starship is a direct reflection of SpaceX’s progress in space exploration.
This journey has been anything but easy, as Starship is an incredibly complex system. In particular, the Raptor engine—especially the Raptor Vacuum—has emerged as a key challenge in recent developments.
As always, however, the SpaceX team has been quick to address the issue and develop a solution.
So, how did SpaceX tackle the Raptor Vacuum problem?
Let’s find out in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
SpaceX's Solution to Solve RVac Engine Problem!
Once again, we must acknowledge that Starship is an extraordinarily complex system, and it will likely take a significant amount of time before it reaches the same level of reliability as the Falcon rockets.
Among its many challenges, the engine—often regarded as the heart of Starship—remains the most intricate component to refine. In the last two flights, the Raptor engine, particularly the Raptor Vacuum (RVac), has underscored just how difficult this process is.
For me, this is a fascinating topic. Prior to Flight 7, whenever the Starship upper stage was operational, its engines—including the Raptor Vacuum—were typically far more stable than those on the Super Heavy booster. However, with the introduction of Version 2 (V2) this year, the Raptor Vacuum has suddenly encountered numerous issues.
So, what exactly is causing these problems?
SpaceX's Solution to Solve RVac Engine Problem!
During Flight 7, the root cause of the issues wasn’t immediately clear. However, in Flight 8, the failures became far more evident when small fires were observed on the Vacuum engines. More critically, one of these fires occurred on an engine’s cooling manifold, a crucial component responsible for regulating engine temperature.
When this system failed, temperatures rose beyond safe limits. Additionally, the fuel system may have experienced leaks or blockages, further disrupting cooling efficiency. With ineffective cooling, the risk of ignition increased. As the fire spread, it triggered explosions and vibrations that affected surrounding systems, ultimately leading to a cascade of engine failures, as seen in Flight 8.

it is no exaggeration to say that
Starship is a direct reflection of
spacex's progress in space exploration
this journey has been anything but easy
as Starship is an incredibly complex

developments as always however the
SpaceX team has been quick to address
the issue and develop a solution so how
did SpaceX tackle the Raptor vacuum
problem let's find out in today's
episode of great SpaceX once again we
must acknowledge that Starship is an
extraordinarily complex system and it'll
likely take a significant amount of time
before it reaches the same level of
reliability as the Falcon Rockets among
its many challenges the engine often
regarded as the heart of Starship
Remains the most intricate component to
refine in the last two flights the
Raptor engine particularly the Raptor
vacuum or RVE has underscored just how
difficult this process is for me
personally this is a fascinating topic
prior to flight 7 whenever the Starship
upper stage was operational its engines
including the arve were typically far
more stable than those on the super
heavy booster however with the
introduction of V2 or version 2 this
year the Raptor vacuum has suddenly
encountered numerous issues so what
exactly is causing these problems during
flight 7 the root cause of the issues
wasn't immediately clear however in
flight 8 the failures became far more
evident when small fires were observed
on the vacuum engines more critically
one of these fires occurred on an
engine's cooling manifold a crucial
component responsible for regulating
engine temperature when this system
failed temperatures Rose beyond safe

have experienced leaks or blockages
further disrupting cooling efficiency
with ineffective cooling the risk of
ignition increased as the fire spread it
triggered explosions and vibrations that
affected surrounding systems ultimately
leading to a Cascade of engine failures
as seen in flight 8 as for the
underlying cause of these leaks or
blockages analysis suggests the issue
originates in the engine feed line
system naturally as fuel levels decrease
during flight the likelihood of
instability within this system increases
this might explain why SpaceX recently
posted job openings for propulsion
systems Engineers specifically tasked
with refining the Raptor engine feed
line additionally it's possible that
modifications introduced in the V2
upgrade played a role in these failures
notably the fuel pipe system on ship V2
incorporates a vacuum insulation
mechanism while this is designed to
enhance efficiency it may also amplify
vibrations within the feed line system
increasing the likelihood of damage
Beyond on these known factors there are
likely other contributing issues with
the Raptor vacuum that have yet to be
fully understood if you have any
insights or theories feel free to share
and discuss them in the comment section
down below ultimately these problems
culminated in the failures we witnessed
during the recent flights in flight 7 a
c-level raptor engine malfunctioned
first followed by the arvac engines
however in flight 8 the situation was
reversed the rvac engine exploded first
which then affected the level Raptors
leading to their subsequent failure with
only two functioning Raptor vacuum
engines remaining the ship's thrust
became unbalanced causing a loss of
control and ultimately resulting in an
explosion as SpaceX continues to refine
Starship addressing these propulsion
challenges will be a top priority with
each test flight valuable lessons are
learned bringing the system closer to
the reliability needed for future deep
space missions fixing the issues with
the rvac engine is not just about
resolving in current challenges it's
crucial for the long-term vision of
Starship within starship's propulsion
system the rvac plays a critical role
due to its size and thrust output
currently a single Raptor vacuum
produces 258 tons of thrust which is
already greater than the 230 tons
generated by the sea- level variant if
the upcoming Raptor 3 version is
implemented this could increase to an
impressive 306 tons compared to 2 280
tons at sea level furthermore SpaceX has
the option to increase the number of
engines on Star shift from 6 to 9
potentially adding three more vacuum
engines this would significantly amplify
their impact on the spacecraft's overall
performance and reliability with the
root causes of the recent failures
identified the key question now is how
will SpaceX address them although the
issues may stem from different sources
they share similar failure effects based
on available visual data and previous
system upgrades it is likely that SpaceX
will incorporate the enhancements
originally revealed for flight 7 to
mitigate the rvx vulnerabilities the
first necessary Improvement is an
upgraded fire suppression system by
utilizing Advanced sensors this system
will detect abnormal Flames such as
those observed on flight 8's vacuum
engines and immediately extinguish them
before they have the chance to spread
this proactive approach could prevent
chain reactions that lead to
catastrophic failures next SpaceX must
refine the venting system by optimizing
pressure release mechanisms they can
prevent excessive pressure buildup in
the event of a leak minimizing the risk
of damage to the engine and surrounding
components structural reinforcement will
also be essential increasing the number
of tie down points for pipes and fuel
feed lines could significantly enhance
stability reducing unwanted vibrations
that might contribute to structural
failures for the vacuum engines
themselves a thorough evaluation of
their fuel delivery system is necessary
any design weaknesses must be identified
and corrected to ensure a more stable
and reliable performance additionally
SpaceX may consider refining the fuel
temperature regulation system more
precise thermal control would prevent
sudden fluctuations that could lead to
material stress or component degradation
over time Beyond these immediate
modifications SpaceX must also consider
implementing an upgraded engine variant
to fully resolve these issues The
Logical next step is the Raptor 3 which
not only delivers High thrust but is
also designed designed to be simpler and
more reliable by removing or integrating
smaller sensitive components SpaceX has
minimized potential failure points
making the engine more robust one of the
most promising features is an optimized
active cooling system which would allow
it to manage thermal loads more
effectively and address overheating
risks more efficiently than its
predecessor the next question is when
will Raptor 3 be introduced despite
being revealed some time ago with
multiple test results confirming its
performance Raptor 3 has yet to be
applied to an operational Starship
flight the likely reason is
compatibility since Starship has not
fully transitioned to the V2 platform
implementing Raptor 3 would present
integration challenges once the entire
super heavy flake moves to V2 the
adoption of Raptor 3 is expected to
follow currently B18 appears to be the
first full V2 prototype if development
proceeds as expected it could debut on
flight 11 which is anticipated to take
place around the middle of this year
given this timeline it is likely that
Raptor 3 will begin appearing in the
coming months to support the testing and
eventual launch of the new booster
configuration what are your thoughts on
spacex's approach to resolving the rvac
issues if you have additional insights
feel free to share them in the comments
section then don't forget to like the
video and subscribe to our channel for
more updates on spacex's incredible
development Journey now when it comes to
resolving the rvac issues
to resolving the rvec issues and
improving Starship as a whole the
upcoming flights will be critical while
SpaceX has already introduced upgrades
it is only through real world testing
that these changes can truly be
validated flight 9 in particular carries
high expectations as it must complete
several key objectives left unfinished
in previous missions but why is this
flight so important first and foremost a
fully successful mission is the most
fundamental measure of progress however
Beyond simply reaching orbit the real
value lies in executing each Mission
phase successfully by doing so SpaceX
can identify remaining weaknesses refine
systems and make necessary adjustments
for future flights the performance of
the arvac engines will be one of the
most closely monitored aspects of flight
9 especially during Ascent when they
play a crucial role in the spacecraft's
trajectory evaluating their behavior
during these high stress phases will
help SpaceX determine whether the recent
upgrades have effectively mitigated past
issues ideally no problems will arise
but if they do the data collected will
be invaluable for further refinements of
course the rvac is only one piece of the
puzzle every system and Mission
objective on flight 9 must be verified
to ensure Starship is progressing toward
full operational capability for instance
SpaceX must successfully conduct a payad
deployment test the results whether
successful or problematic will provide
crucial insights into improving the
payload dispenser system and and
refining the design of payloads
themselves for future missions re-entry
testing is another major objective with
the shift to Starship V2 several
critical components including the flaps
and heat shield have undergone
significant changes flight 9 will offer
the first opportunity to test these
modifications under real conditions
allowing Engineers to assess their
effectiveness and make any necessary
adjustments additionally Mission
elements that were proven on previous
Starship versions but have yet to be
demonstrated on V two such as an inspace
engine relight and controlled ocean
Landing must be completed these steps
are essential to proving the spacecrafts
reliability and Gathering the data
needed to progress toward more advanced
Milestones such as catching the ship
with mechazilla arms or conducting
complex space missions like payload
deployments and inorbit refueling
operations meanwhile certain procedures
that have been successfully executed in
recent flights must continue to be
refined for example super Heavy's
Landing maneuver with mechazilla has
shown promise but the issues that caused
post-separation engine failures must be
fully addressed to ensure long-term
reliability ultimately all of these
efforts contribute to the overarching
goal making Starship a stable fully
reusable spacecraft to achieve this this
upgrade currently being implemented on
S35 and B16 will be crucial these
prototypes will be the first to
incorporate the latest refinements and
their performance in upcoming tests will
directly influence the future of the
Starship program both vehicles have
already completed their cryogenic tests
and with engine installation as the next
major step the focus will now shift
toward ensuring that the Raptor vacuum
upgrades and all other improvements are
effectively integrated before flight
nine overcoming the challenges of the
Raptor engine particularly the arvac is
essential for SpaceX to achieve its
ambitious goals in space exploration
