獨家Endangered Dusky Monkeys at Thai Airbase! 🐒Too Cute to Miss at Ao Manao😆Prachuap Khiri Khan
The Thai military restricts access to "Khao Lom Muak," a mountain inhabited by Dusky leaf monkeys, located within the Wing 5 Air Force Base in Prachuap Khiri Khan. This popular lookout and hiking spot offers stunning views of Ao Noi, Ao Prachuap, and Ao Manao bays. We would have loved to enjoy the scenery, but the Thai military only permits climbers to ascend the mountain on a limited number of mornings each year. Nevertheless, even without the hike, observing these endangered Dusky leaf monkeys was a truly special experience, and we thoroughly enjoyed spending part of our morning with them.
If you want to visit, you need to be on a scooter WITH a helmet, carrying your foreign passport. (People are prohibited from walking or riding a bicycle in). A guard will hold your passport while you are inside the Wing 4 Royal Thai airbase, and will return it upon departure. Just smile and tell them "monkeys," are you'll be right.
About Dusky leaf monkeys:
Dusky leaf monkeys, also known as spectacled langurs, are primates found in parts of Central Thailand, as well as Malaysia and Burma. In Central Thailand, they inhabit tropical forests, such as those in Kaeng Krachan National Park, but their populations are declining due to habitat loss from deforestation, urbanization, and agriculture. They are classified as endangered by the IUCN Red List (since 2015) due to these threats, along with poaching and road mortality. Their rarity stems from shrinking forest habitats and fragmented populations, making sightings in the wild increasingly uncommon. Conservation efforts, including CITES Appendix II listing, aim to protect them, but their future remains uncertain without sustained habitat preservation.
