SpaceX revealed Major Plan Changed on Starship Catching after Flight 8 Failed Again...
Catching Ship is undoubtedly the most anticipated attempt of the year.
Previous reports suggested that the next flight, Flight 9, would be the moment we finally see it happen.
However, the results of the last two flights have altered those expectations. In response, SpaceX has announced a significant change to its plan for catching Ship.
So, what exactly has changed?
Let’s find out in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.

We can't predict exactly how Starship will evolve, but one thing is clear: every change is made with Mars in mind, built on the foundation of full reusability.
To achieve that goal, SpaceX must recover and reuse the entire rocket. Progress has already been made with Super Heavy, which has successfully landed using Mechazilla’s arms, and some engines have been reused. The next major milestone will be catching Ship.
Before 2025, many—including myself—expected this attempt to take place on Flight 9 if everything went according to plan. There were solid reasons for this assumption. After Flight 6, when the Ship landed relatively smoothly in the ocean, Elon Musk stated, “We will do one more ocean landing of the ship. If that goes well, then SpaceX will attempt to catch the ship with the tower.” While Flight 9 wasn’t explicitly mentioned, subsequent details about Ship 35 reinforced this possibility. This Ship was observed with a hole system designed for a catching point, which has now been installed.

Additionally, the FCC license for Flight 9 indicated the potential for both the booster and the second stage to return to the launch site. This update likely wasn’t accidental, suggesting that SpaceX was at least considering the option.
However, the results of Flight 7 and Flight 8 have made a catching attempt on Flight 9 unlikely. While Super Heavy once again landed successfully using Mechazilla’s arms, Ship failed to complete its mission due to similar issues in both flights. This indicates that more ocean landings are required before attempting to catch it with the tower.
