When Mrs. Lee opens a letter that Zoe, Harvey and Lassie bring her, she learns that she is the last living heir to a former mining concession. When Mrs. Lee lets them read her journal from the period, the kids and Lassie set out in search of the abandoned mine to discover the "magnificent treasure" that the journal hints is hidden there.

They call me lessee, if you need somebody, I will never let you down.
I will find the key, you can trust in me, I'm a friend to everyone.
And I go, go under the rainbow, I will be your call, your call.
And I go, go never take it slow, I will help you all, you all.
We're going to make it to Mrs. Lee's before you!
We might actually beat her for once!
Woohoo!
Hey, we won!
I don't believe it! How did Lassie beat us here?
I'm guessing she took a shortcut or two, right? Clever girl!
Good morning, kids! And hello, Lassie!
Hey, Mrs. Lee!
We brought you your mail!
Why, thank you, kids! Come on in! I just took a pie out of the oven!
Hey, Lassie! What are you doing here?
Hey, Biff! We came by to bring Mrs. Lee her mail, but it looks like we're saved for lunch!
Lassie is having lunch? Here? With me? Yes!
Blueberry! My favorite!
Well, help yourselves! There's plenty for everyone!
Mrs. Lee!
Are you okay, Mrs. Lee?
Mrs. Lee! What's wrong?
I guess it's official. I'm the last one.
The last one, Mrs. Lee?
The last one of what?
There were six of us. All of us young. All of us looking to make our fortunes.
They had just struck gold over in Snake Canyon, so we came up here together, certain that we could strike it rich.
You owned a real gold mine?
How much gold did you end up finding?
None. No gold at all. But we discovered something even more precious.
The natural beauty and splendor of the land and this park. I've lived here happily ever since.
But what about the gold mine?
Yeah, what happened to it?
When it was over, none of us could stand to sell the land.
So we just held on to the mine and decided that the deed would eventually go to the last surviving member of our group.
Wait! You mean...
So when you said you were the last one...
Dumont here and I were the only ones left.
But what came this morning was from his lawyers in Jefferson City.
And so I guess now it's just me.
I'm so sorry, Mrs. Lee.
Yeah, sorry.
It's okay, kids. It's very sad news, but I'll be all right. Don't worry.
So what are you going to do with the mine now, Mrs. Lee?
Nothing. I want to keep it as a memory of the good old days.
I've always wanted to go digging for gold.
If you want to go looking for it, everything you need to find about the mine is in this journal.
Thanks, Mrs. Lee!
Remember, everything you need to know is in here.
Psst! Rozzy, what's so great about gold anyway? Why does everyone want to go looking for it?
I'm not sure, Biff. It's shiny and pretty, I suppose.
You think?
Uh, I gotta go. Emergency meeting with the Barn Gang! Bye, Lassie!
Whoa! This journal is so cool! Thanks, Mrs. Lee!
No problem. Trust me, that journal holds the key to everything.
Don't worry about that, Harvey. You two run along now and leave the clearing up to me.
You sure?
Go on now.
Bye, Mrs. Lee. See you.
Thanks so much!
Bye, Mrs. Lee!
Excuse me, do you know Mrs. Lee's store? Is it far?
Not at all. Fifteen minutes walk from here.
Thank you.
Snake Canyon? You sure they said Snake Canyon?
Lassie, that's where Mrs. Lee said they had their mine. Lassie thinks gold is pretty.
If we find some, maybe I can give it to her and win her heart.
You don't get it, Biff. If we find gold, you don't need to win her heart. You can just buy it.
Wow, Houdini! That's so romantic!
This isn't about romance. This is simple commerce. Economics 101.
Gold is only valuable because you can trade it to get stuff you want.
Really? Like what stuff?
Everything! Anything!
What about happiness? Health? Friends? Wisdom? What?
Oh, no, no. Not that stuff. I mean the important things.
Look, just trust me on this. We find gold and we'll all be set for life.
Now departing to Snake Canyon.
Hey, I think that's a ride!
Then what are we waiting for? There's gold up in their hills!
We need to remember this bus so we can take it back!
Don't worry about it! By then we'll be flushed with gold! We'll buy our own bus!
Good morning! Can I help you boys find something?
Yes, I think you can actually. My name is Charles. Charles Dumont.
And this is my brother, Alfred.
That's right. I believe you knew our father.
Yes, of course. Nice to meet you. And I'm so sorry for your loss. Is there anything I can do?
Oh yes, there certainly is. You see, our father left everything to us in his will.
Everything except his share in a certain gold mine.
And as we understand it, you're the only person left alive who knows where we can find it.
What do you two want? What are you doing here?
Isn't that obvious? We're here for the gold, of course.
And make no mistake, we're not leaving until we get it.
Wow! It's magnificent!
No mystery why they call this place Snake Canyon.
Then we must be in the right place. Come on!
Zoe, Snake Canyon is huge! Mrs. Lee wasn't even sure she could remember where the mine was.
What makes you think we can find it?
Because we have all the clues we need right here in Mrs. Lee's journal.
Look! She filled the pages with all kinds of sketches, symbols and landmarks.
They must lead straight to her mining camp.
It would have been easier if she had just drawn a map.
Easier maybe, but a lot less fun. Come on, Harvey. It'll be like a real-life treasure hunt.
It's time to walk to the mine.
You are wasting your time! We never found a single speck of gold in that mine!
Yeah, our father always used to tell us that same exact story.
And we always believed him too.
Until we were packing up his belongings and happened to come across this letter to him from an old friend.
Dearest Dumont, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Despite giving up vast wealth and material riches,
I have never once regretted our group's decision to walk away from the mine
and keep the amazing discovery we found there a secret.
Does that sound familiar?
It should. You wrote it.
Well, let me tell you what we think.
We think that there's a gold mine somewhere in this camp.
We think that this gold mine rightfully belongs to us as part of our father's inheritance.
And we think it's filled with, as you yourself put it, vast wealth and material riches.
And we think you're going to lead us to it, whether you want to or not.
Two towering rocks mark the head of the trail leading to our camp.
We've nicknamed the formation the Twin Mushrooms.
See? There you go. That must be our first clue.
I don't know. None of these rocks look like mushrooms to me.
I know. And remember, we need to find two of them.
Those large boulders kind of look like mushroom tops.
Yeah, and those cones over there could be mushroom stalks.
But there's nothing that looks like the sketch in Mrs. Lee's journal.
Could it be?
I don't think so.
Not from here there isn't. But if we follow Lassie, look what happens!
Yes! Nice thinking, Lassie!
Are we it?
Guys! The bus!
What? Who? How? Where?
How are we supposed to get to Snake Canyon now?
We can just follow these.
I've seen the edge of a canyon that looks exactly like a snake from the air.
We just need to walk this way.
What's our next clue, Zoe?
I'm not sure. She has a heading that says Landmarks, but those two pages are just blank.
Look! There's nothing on them.
That is strange. If Mrs. Lee never found any gold,
why did she go through so much trouble to keep the location of the mine a secret?
I'm not exactly sure, but knowing Mrs. Lee, she must have had a good reason.
What's the matter, Lassie?
It looks like she's picking up some kind of familiar scent out here.
I don't know, but it looks like she wants to follow.
In that case, we better follow her!
Where is she taking us?
Don't ask me!
The sooner you bring us there, the better it will be for all of us.
Mrs. Lee? So that's the scent Lassie was following!
Mrs. Lee! Mrs. Lee!
Untie her!
Get rid of them, quickly!
Hey, kids! What a surprise! I'm so happy to see you!
Is everything all right, Mrs. Lee? What are you doing here?
Everything is just fine, kids.
These are Dumont's sons, Charles and Alfred.
I agreed to bring them out here and show them where their father and I used to hunt for gold.
That's right. In fact, we better get going.
So, run along, kids.
Hold on, Mrs. Lee. We'll come with you.
Yeah, maybe we can help.
No thanks. You kids should really be getting home, where you'll be safe.
You know what? Mrs. Lee's right, Harvey. We really need to be going.
Nice meeting you two. Have fun! Come on, guys!
I told you to quit stalling and take us to the gold, remember?
It was years and years ago!
You wait and see how good your memory is when you get to be as old as me!
Well, if you ever want to get any older, your memory better start improving and fast!
Your father was such a wonderful man. How did he end up with two rotten kids like you?
I know, Lassie. Mrs. Lee's in trouble.
And those two guys are up to no good. Zoe, we've got to go and get your dad.
We can't just leave Mrs. Lee alone with them. Harvey, she could be in real danger.
I know. That's exactly why we need to get help.
You go and get my father. I'll stay here. We can't abandon her.
Zoe, I'm leaving you alone with those guys.
If we follow them too closely, they might spot us. That could put Mrs. Lee in even more danger.
But we don't have to follow them. We know where they're going. They're making Mrs. Lee take them to the mine.
But why? They never found any gold there, remember?
Let me see that journal.
Let's see. This entry near the end is right before they packed up and shut down the mine.
It says that the last thing they did was drill deeper for core samples at the site.
So maybe they found something there after all.
Maybe, but the answer to this mystery is probably at the mine.
We need to try to get there first so we can figure this whole thing out.
But how? There is no next clue, remember? Just these blank pages under landmarks.
What is it, girl? There's nothing there.
Hold on. Just because the pages appear blank doesn't mean there's nothing on them.
Maybe it's just something we can't see.
Lemons! Of course!
Mrs. Lee wrote the rest of the clues in invisible ink.
Lemons? Invisible ink?
Maybe you should just sit down, Harvey. It sounds like maybe you've been out in the sun a bit too long.
No, no. Just watch.
Lemon juice is completely invisible when applied to paper.
But if you add a little heat to it...
Yes!
Whoa! Very clever, Mrs. Lee.
And well done, Harvey.
Come on.
Buzz! Stop!
Come on! You can take a break after we make it over to this next clue.
Everybody!
Go! Go there!
D.B., come back!
D.B.!
If Mrs. Lee found something here years ago,
we still don't know what it is or why the Dumonts are forcing her to bring them here.
Mrs. Lee told us that they never found anything valuable, remember?
No. Mrs. Lee told us that they never found any gold.
But maybe it was something else.
That would explain why Mrs. Lee spent so much trouble writing the location in code.
But what else could they have found?
I don't know.
Look! This must be it!
Mrs. Lee's mining camp!
Yes!
The answer must be in here somewhere.
It's like the invisible link. We just haven't found it yet.
This is it. This is what we have to find.
Did you find it?
No, not yet.
Nothing. Not even a clue.
Yes, a slight bump.
The water tower!
Whatever they found, they must have stashed it up there.
Harvey, be careful! There must be some water left inside!
I don't think so. Water will evaporate with time.
So there is a box!
Yeah!
It's some kind of chest.
But it's locked. And we don't have a key.
Mrs. Lee said that everything we needed was in the journal, right?
Right! She said the journal held the key to everything.
Okay, let's find out what Mrs. Lee has been keeping secret all these years.
Hey! Smells like crude oil.
Oil. They must have struck oil, Harvey. Not gold. Oil!
But a find like that could have been more valuable than gold. Why keep it a secret?
Think about it, Harvey.
Mrs. Lee told us that the most valuable thing they discovered was the beauty of all this.
If they had reported their discovery to anyone…
Oil and drilling companies would have sworn in here and swallowed up this whole valley.
It would never have been declared a national park.
Mrs. Lee kept the whole thing a secret to protect the land.
The Dumonts and Mrs. Lee!
Oh no! And they're headed right for us!
Hurry!
Look at this! Someone must have got here right before us.
Not just someone. It had to be those stupid meddling kids and their stupid dog.
Whoever it was, they certainly seem to have outsmarted the two of you.
If they're really smart, they'd better do what we say.
Hey kids! You may have the gold.
But remember, we still have your friend here.
If you know what's good for you and good for her…
What can we do?
You bring us the gold and we'll let Mrs. Lee here go free.
Is it a deal?
Okay. Mrs. Lee, start walking towards us. And then we'll send Lassie over.
There they are!
As soon as she gets close enough, you grab that gold.
Get ready.
Now!
Hurry!
Hey Charles! They tricked us!
What? You'll be sorry for that! You hear me? You just wait until we find you!
Harvey!
Don't worry. All the drilling samples are right here.
Good work, kids. But right now, we need to get out of here.
But how? The Dumonts are going to be waiting for us on the trail.
There's a mine opening in that hill.
As I recall, there's one shaft that leads out on the other side.
Now follow me.
Houdini!
There he is!
Near the entrance to that mine!
Houdini!
Lassie!
That way they won't be running anywhere.
All we have to do now is get Gram.
If you want my opinion, the gold rush was a waste of time.
The only thing worth rushing for is a plate of pie.
At least somebody's going home happy.
You did it to protect the land. Right, Mrs. Lee?
To preserve everything around us.
And you kept your discovery a secret from everyone.
Not quite everyone.
I gave this journal to you because I knew the three of you would manage to figure it out.
Don't worry, Mrs. Lee.
Your secret is safe with us.
I know it is. That's why I'm signing over the deed to the mine to the two of you.
But not just the two of you.
To Lassie, too.
