Jesu, der du meine Seele (Jesus, who are my soul), BWV 78, is a sacred cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed it in Leipzig for the 14th Sunday after Trinity and premiered it on 10 September 1724. It is based on the 1641 hymn by Johann Rist, "Jesu, der du meine Seele", after which it is named. The theme of the chorale, the Passion of Jesus who purifies the believer, is only distantly related to the Sunday readings.

Jesu, der du meine Seele is part of Bach's cycle of chorale cantatas, the second cycle during his tenure as Thomaskantor, which began in 1723. The text retains the first and last stanzas of the hymn unchanged, while the text of the inner stanzas was paraphrased by an unknown librettist into a sequence of five movements of alternating arias and recitatives, retaining a few more lines of the original chorale. The first movement is a chorale fantasia in passacaglia form, and the work concludes with a four-part chorale setting.

It has been scored for four vocal soloists, a four-part chorus and a baroque instrumental ensemble of transverse flute, two oboes, strings and continuo. Bach achieved the expression of contrasting emotions in dramatic recitatives, anguish in 'contrapuntal density' and accessible arias illustrating hope.

Yes, it [my conscience] will fulfill [the demands of] your faithfulness,
For your word bids me hope.
When Christians believe in you,
No foe, into eternity,
Shall steal them from your hands.
