Though John Philip Sousa is popular and synonymous with military music today, not every piece he composed was instantly a hit. A great example of this would be "The White Rose March", which he wrote in 1917 for "The White Rose Day Celebration" in Pennsylvania. The event itself was canceled, and the march only saw a few public performances before fading from the spotlight.
The piece thankfully reemerged in wind symphony and concert band literature, and is considered one of Sousa's jolliest and most rollicking marches. It was a highlight during our Concert Band's most recent 2024 tour!
