SpaceX's NEW Solution to Prevent the Pad Damage by Starship Booster 35 engines!...
Starship is only going to become more advanced and more powerful.
In the future, this mighty spacecraft will be equipped with up to 35 Raptor engines—a level of thrust almost beyond imagination. It’s hard to picture any launch pad system capable of withstanding such raw power.
But that’s just how the average mind sees it. SpaceX, on the other hand, has already devised a brilliant solution to tackle this challenge.
So, what groundbreaking technology do they have up their sleeve?
Let’s find out on today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
SpaceX's NEW Solution to Prevent the Pad Damage by Starship Booster 35 engines!...
Since the installation of the water deluge system, it has consistently demonstrated its reliability in shielding Stage 0 from the intense heat generated during Starship launches. However, the system is now poised to face an unprecedented challenge.
An environmental impact report submitted by SpaceX for launching 44 Starship flights at LC39A, published by the FAA in July, outlines SpaceX’s proposal to launch Starships configured with up to 35 Raptor engines for the Super Heavy Booster. This upgrade is crucial, as SpaceX plans to develop Starship V3 with up to 10,000 tons of thrust at sea level. While this is an impressive number, the sheer power of 35 engines carries with it a significant risk: the potential to destroy the launch pad beneath it. A quick glance at what occurred during the first test flight of Starship helps illustrate this danger. The launch caused extensive damage to the pad and surrounding infrastructure, leaving a large crater in the concrete beneath the launch mount, while debris from the pad was sent flying for miles.

So, how does SpaceX intend to avoid a repeat of this destructive event? Fortunately, the company seems to have found a solution. Elon Musk revealed on X last year that “the new launch pad is already designed to withstand the forces generated by a 10,000-ton thrust version of Starship,” which, he pointed out, is almost exactly three times more powerful than the Saturn V Moon rocket. This new pad, under construction at Starbase since last year, represents a monumental step forward. It’s not just a facility to support SpaceX’s ongoing Starship project; it is also equipped with cutting-edge systems to handle future versions of the spacecraft.
