Genius! How SpaceX and NASA land Starship On The Moon
For the first time in 50 years, NASA is actively working to return astronauts to the Moon, driven by a desire to maintain U.S. leadership in space exploration. Meanwhile, SpaceX is also setting its sights on conquering the Moon, viewing it as a critical stepping stone in its ambitious goal of colonizing Mars. Sharing this vision, NASA entrusted SpaceX with a 2.9 billion dollar worth contract in 2021 to develop the lunar lander. The point is, how exactly will they make their lunar touchdown? Let's uncover the answer in today's episode of Tech Pace.

The reason why Nasa needs Lunar starship
The very first question, why did NASA choose SpaceX for its lunar mission? As you may know, NASA successfully completed the Artemis 1 mission, an unmanned test flight that orbited the Moon. This mission proved that the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft are ready for manned flights to the Moon. The real issue is that getting a vehicle into lunar orbit and back is all the SLS can do; it lacks a very crucial piece of the puzzle: the landing capability. And that's why NASA turned to SpaceX to solve this conundrum.

In this plan, the HLS Starship serves as both the lander and ascent stage. SpaceX has been developing reusable versions of the Starship designed for landing and taking off from Mars. Therefore, SpaceX only needs to make minor adjustments to adapt it for the Moon. This approach is far more cost-effective than if NASA were to develop its own lunar lander from scratch, especially at a time when NASA is facing budget cuts.
