The ultimate guide to the cranial nerves continues with cranial nerve VII, the facial nerve, this is the cranial nerve the requires we get the patient to pull a series of faces. Not merely for the fun of it, but in order to test the muscles of expression

There are five branches to the facial nerve:
- temporal
- zygomatic
- buccal
- maxillary
- cervical

Each branch is examined in turn, with particular attention paid to the temporal region due to its bilateral innervation meaning its function is unaffected if that patient has a stroke, unlike the remaining CNVII branches
