Cranial Nerve VII - The Facial Nerve - Ultimate Guide to Cranial Nerve Examination
The ultimate guide to the cranial nerves continues with cranial nerve VII, the facial nerve, this is the cranial nerve the requires we get the patient to pull a series of faces. Not merely for the fun of it, but in order to test the muscles of expression
There are five branches to the facial nerve:
- temporal
- zygomatic
- buccal
- maxillary
- cervical
Each branch is examined in turn, with particular attention paid to the temporal region due to its bilateral innervation meaning its function is unaffected if that patient has a stroke, unlike the remaining CNVII branches
