Cranial Nerve XI & XII - Accessory and Hypoglossal Nerve - Ultimate Guide
The final video in the ultimate guide to understanding the cranial nerves!!
Whilst there are many nerves which can be argued as being more important than cranial nerve XI and XII, the Accessory & Hypoglossal Nerves have a considerable function for the patient:
The accessory nerve allows the patient to turn their head and move their shoulders, whilst the hypoglossal nerve allows control of the tongue.
In this video, we will detail how to examine these two final nerves.
Although for those of you who might be interested in a little subversive knowledge - there are actually thirteen cranial nerves, the thirteenth nerve is actually vestigial and is thought to have had a role in pheromone detection further back down our ancestral tree. Interesting stuff, but I wouldn't advise you discuss it during your examinations!
