Kawasaki disease is a Vasculitic disease of the medium-sized arteries.
It typically affects young children between 1 to 5 years of age.
However, rarely it can occur in teenagers and adults as well.
In this video, I will discuss about the most common signs and symptoms of Kawasaki disease.
Most parents seek medical attention because of the prolonged fever.
Other principal clinical features include the following.
Bilateral conjunctival injection.
Diffuse erythema of the oropharyngeal mucosa.
A strawberry tongue.
Extremity changes, including erythematous palms and soles, and periungual desquamation.
A polymorphous rash, involving the whole body.
And cervical lymphadenopathy.
Additional features include runny nose, cough, diarrhea, vomiting, irritability, abdominal pain, and joint pain.
A severe complication of Kawasaki disease is cardiovascular disease, commonly presenting as coronary artery aneurysms.
This can ultimately lead to arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, or heart attack, and heart failure.
