Stye, medically known as hordeolum, is a common infectious disease of the eyelid.
It is usually caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus & it involves either the glands of Zeis or, less frequently, the meibomian glands.
Inflammation in these glands leads to thickening and stasis of gland secretions, which facilitates secondary bacterial infection, usually by Staphylococcus aureus.
Histologically, hordeolum represents an abscess.
