Elon Musk Revealed Why SpaceX Ditched Water Deluge System on Starship New Launch Pad...
For Starship enthusiasts, the six-legged Orbital Launch Mount (OLM) system—along with the powerful water deluge system beneath it—has become a familiar sight. This combination has proven to be highly effective.
However, in the long run, SpaceX will need a completely redesigned system, featuring significant upgrades to the launch tower, the OLM, and, most importantly, the addition of a flame trench system.
But why were these systems chosen in the first place? And how are the upgrades progressing?
Let’s dive into the details on today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
Elon Musk Revealed Why SpaceX Ditched Water Deluge System on Starship New Launch Pad...
Before we dive in, I want to remind you that we’re ramping up our coverage. From now on, we’ll be bringing you two videos per day—one in the morning and another at noon—to keep up with the ever-increasing pace of SpaceX and the aerospace industry. We appreciate your support as we work harder than ever to bring you the latest updates. Thank you.
One of the most significant developments at Starbase since last year has been the construction of Pad B, and now, it’s reaching its final stages. When discussing Pad B, the first thing that comes to mind is the flame trench system beneath the Orbital Launch Mount. This is a major change compared to Pad A, and for good reason.
Elon Musk Revealed Why SpaceX Ditched Water Deluge System on Starship New Launch Pad...
Flame trench systems have been a staple of NASA’s launch infrastructure for decades, helping to direct and dissipate the immense energy released during rocket launches. SpaceX has already tested a version of this system at the Massey Test Site, and the results have been promising. In fact, during an interview with Everyday Astronaut last year, Elon Musk hinted at the eventual implementation of a flame trench system for Starship.

the details on today's episode of great

day one in the morning and another at
noon to keep up with the ever increasing

we work harder than ever to bring you
the latest updates thank you so much now
on to our updates one of the most
significant developments at Starbase
since last year has been the
construction of padb and now it's
reaching its final stages when
discussing pad B the first thing that
comes to mind is the flame trench system
beneath the orbital launch Mount this is
a major change compared to pad a and for
good reason flame trench systems have
been a staple of NASA's launch
infrastructure for decades helping to
direct and dissipate the immense energy
released during rocket launches SpaceX
has already tested a version of the
system at the Massie test site and the
results have been promising in fact
during an interview with everyday
astronaut last year Elon Musk hinted at
the eventual implementation of a flame
trench system for Starship the benefits
of this system are clear a flame trench
provides an angled surface that directs
the exhaust away from critical
infrastructure reducing direct impact on
the launch Mount and surrounding
structures additionally it works in
tandem with a high-powered water deal
luch system to further mitigate heat and
pressure to construct this system SpaceX
has already excavated a large space
beneath the mm at pad B this area will
first be reinforced with a solid
concrete foundation before the
installation of a flame bucket system
which will be integrated with the water
manifolds unlike conventional flame
trenches that direct exhaust in a single
Direction SpaceX is implementing a dual
flame trench design allowing the energy
from each test and launch to be safely
dispersed into two directions
this setup will greatly reduce wear and
tear on the Launchpad making it more
sustainable for long-term highfrequency
Starship launches as SpaceX scales up
Starship operations this will be
critical especially when future versions
such as V2 and V3 versions of Starship
introduces even greater thrust and
structural enhancements the decision to
switch to a flame trench design stems
from the challenges faced with the
existing system pad a currently uses a
watercooled steel plate system also
referred to as as a reverse shower
system this consists of Steel plates
perforated with small holes through
which water is pumped at high pressure
during ignition to absorb heat and
dampen the force of the engines this
system was introduced after the damage
caused during starship's first test
flight and it successfully prevented the
kind of catastrophic ground erosion seen
in Flight one however this method has
its limitations while it offers some
protection it does not actively redirect
the Rocket's energy this means that each
test or launch still results in massive
dust clouds and debris scattering across
star base potentially endangering
surrounding infrastructure additionally
after repeated use discoloration on
these steel plates has been observed
suggesting that they may degrade over
time when subjected to continuous
high-intensity launches for these
reasons the flame trench system
represents a more effective long-term
solution once the flame trench is in
place attention will shift to the olm
itself unlike the six-legged structure
of pad a the mm at pad B will have a
completely different design instead of a
Leed frame it will take the form of a
square block similar in appearance to
test stands or transport stands used at
Starbase this new design offers several
advantages first it will feature an
integrated water cooled deck allowing
the olm to actively manage heat and
pressure more effectively unlike pad A's
external manifolds and piping pad B's
cooling system will be built directly
into the structure another significant
Advantage is the mobility and
replaceability of the new olm unlike pad
a which is fixed in place the new
structure is designed to be modular
making it easy to replace or repair
without significantly disrupting launch
operations this new design will also
make maintenance and refurbishment far
more efficient ensuring the pad remains
in top condition even with spacex's
increasingly ambitious launch Cadence
beyond the olm and frame Plame pamper
flame trench system flame trench
upgrades SpaceX is also making changes
to the adjacent launch Tower
observations suggest that this new tower
will be taller than the current one an
upgrade that aligns with the expected
growth of Starship in future iterations
the increase in height also indicates
that pad B will take on a more Central
role in spacex's long-term launch
strategy potentially replacing pad a as
the primary launch site one of the most
anticipated upgrades will be to the
Chopsticks system the New Chopsticks at
pad B will be optimized for catching
efforts which remains one of spacex's
most ambitious goals early indications
suggest that these upgrades will focus
on catching Starships specifically
helping to split the workload between
the two towers the refinements may
include modifications to The Landing
rails lifting pins and overall
structural enhancements to improve
precision and reliability according to
previous statements from Elon Musk the
New Chopsticks will also be lighter and
shorter than those currently in use at
pad a making them more efficient while
maintaining their strength and
functionality all these powerful
improvements coming to pad B are setting
the stage for a stronger more
sustainable future for Starship the
first demonstration of this system will
be an exciting Milestone showing just
how much SpaceX has refined its approach
to Rapid reusable and highfrequency
Starship operations are you ready for
this next step if you're excited to see
pad B in action reply operate soon in
the comment section down below then like
the video and subscribe if you haven't
already to keep following spacex's
Incredible Journey meanwhile SpaceX is
making significant strides toward the
launch of its new system pushing the
boundaries of what's possible in space
flight regarding the flame trench the
excavation process is likely still
ongoing this is the most timeconsuming
phasee requiring precise work to create
the necessary space once that is
complete the next step will be pouring
concrete which will be a faster process
meanwhile the pipe system which plays a
crucial role in directing water flow has
already been assembled at the Sanchez
site and appears to be ready once
everything is in place the pipes will be
transported to the trench for
installation the orbital launch Mount is
also progressing steadily like the flame
trenches pipe system the mm is currently
under construction at the Sanchez site
scaffolding is densely built around the
structure signaling that the work is in
its busiest phase once fully assembled
the mm will be transported to the
Launchpad and placed over the flame
trench as for the Chopsticks system its
first section has already been installed
on the launch Tower additional sections
will likely arrive soon and be connected
to extend its reach meanwhile the drive
systems responsible for the Chopsticks
movement will be installed shortly with
all these developments progress on pad B
is set to accelerate even further in the
coming weeks given the current Pace I
expect it to be completed within the
first half of next month this timeline
is critical as SpaceX intends to use
Tower B for launching Starship with a
Target flight scheduled for the latter
half of March or April assuming
everything goes according to plan Beyond
just expanding spacex's operational
capabilities pad B will also be
instrumental in unlocking the full
reusability of Starship this is a game
changer setting Starship apart from
every other launch vehicle in existence
the excitement surrounding this
Milestone is undeniable speaking of the
future NASA and Japan have just made a
major announcement regarding the Artemis
program when the could shape the next
era of lunar exploration there has been
a great deal of speculation surrounding
emis especially concerning potential
changes under the new Administration
some rumors suggest that the space
launch system could be cancelled While
others point to Elon Musk encouraging
the government to shift its focus toward
Mars however a new development has
clarified the program's trajectory on
February 7th the White House released an
official statement reaffirming the
partnership between NASA and Japan in
advancing Artemis this announcement
coincided with Japanese prime minister
ishibashi's visit to the US for a
meeting with President Donald Trump The
Joint statement read the United States
and Japan intend to continue their
strong partnership in civil space and on
Aeronautics science and human
exploration including on the upcoming
crew 10 mission to the International
Space Station that includes us and
Japanese astronauts as well as lunar
surface exploration on future Artemis
missions this confirms that aremis
remains a priority and will continue
moving forward the US and Japan have
long maintained a strong colle
collaboration in space exploration Japan
already operates a module on the
International Space Station and has sent
astronauts aboard spacex's crew dragon
with more to come in the upcoming crew
10 Mission the two Nations also recently
partnered on the lunar lander mission in
January which included Blue Ghost and
hako R additionally Japan is playing a
key role in the emis program jaxa has
been developing the ihab module for the
lunar Gateway provided the project isn't
cancelled they are also working on the
lunar Cruiser Rover which will support
lunar surface exploration in return
Japan will have access to Starship cargo
for their Rover missions and Japanese
astronauts will be given seats on future
Artemis lunar Landings these updates
reinforce that emis will remain active
in the near future ensuring that
Humanity returns to the Moon as planned
this mission is crucial for space
exploration and its success will pave
the way for further developments in
human space flight with Artemis 3
standing out as the next major Milestone
of course beyond the Moon Mars remains a
long-term objective one that aligns with
Elon musk's vision of interplanetary
colonization instead of viewing these
two goals as competing priorities they
should be seen as complimentary
advancements made for emis will serve as
stepping stones for Mars missions and
the pursuit of Mars will in turn Drive
Innovation for lunar operations the
future of space exploration is unfolding
rapidly and it's only going to get more
exciting from here let's see where these
developments take us next with pad B
nearing completion and SpaceX refining
its infrastructure for highfrequency
Starship launches the transition to a
flame trench system and upgraded olm
marks a pivotal shift in Launchpad
design these improvements will enhance
durability efficiency and safety as
Starship evolves meanwhile NASA and
Japan's reaffirmed commitment to Artemis
signals continued progress toward lunar
exploration Paving the way for future
Mars missions the Synergy between these
advancements is shaping the future of
space flight if you're excited for
