This opera is not written for the Viennese, but rather for the people of Prague, and above all for me and my friends. This is what Mozart himself is said to have said about his Don Giovanni, which premiered in Prague in 1787. Indeed, the Prague premiere was a sensational success, to which the lukewarm response of the Viennese in 1788 could not hold a candle. Don Giovanni is Mozart's Prague opera in the truest sense of the word. The Czech organist Kucharz, who was involved in the production, was right: 'What comes from Mozart will certainly please the Bohemians'.

After the premiere of Don Giovanni on 29 October 1787 at the Estates Theatre in Prague, the whole city was full of praise for the opera and its music. Newspapers, scholarly discussions and, above all, the streets and taverns echoed with Lá ci darem la mano and Don Giovanni's serenade. For those who could not see the opera in the theatre, there was only one source of information about its wonderful melodies: 'Harmoniemusik'. This was the name given in Mozart's time to the ubiquitous music for two oboes, clarinets, horns and bassoons (with bass ad libitum). As table music it sweetened the palates of the nobility, as street music the evenings of the lower classes, and many an innkeeper used wind ensembles to attract customers. The musical fare served to all classes, from the nobility to the servants, tasted especially good when it was spiced with the latest opera hits. And in Prague in November 1787, these were the tunes of Don Giovanni.
