Den 27 januari var det 80 år sedan Auschwitz befriades. Över en miljon människor dog i nazisternas dödsläger, de flesta var judar.

Auschwitz was established by Nazi Germany and occupied Poland as part of Hitler's final solution to the extermination of European Jews.
1944 Agnes Darvas is deported from Ungern to Auschwitz.
She escaped with her life and was sent directly to the gas chamber with another child.
I'm sure she's wearing a stolen cap and a newly clipped hairstyle.
Her cappa had been stolen in the Ghetto and her mother had been cut from her flower by the Raid for ransom.
The loose cap and the improvised hairstyle made her stand before Josef Mengele, Auschwitz's only death angel, who determined who was fit for work and who should die.
She and her mother soon sent Blasov to work in a stone-building factory with a hack that was as heavy as her.
Darvas told me that their clothes were taken from them.
From Mauthausen we got to see Roseanne and there we got to read.
There were some writings in Auschwitz that said they read your death.
Her hair and clothes were full of them and she even got typhoid.
When they reached the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Darvas could no longer walk, and typhus and cholera caused by dirty water made her only able to survive.
The British troops liberated Bergen-Belsen on 15 April 1945 Darvas remembers that they were told of their freedom.
Darvas says the camp was full of dead bodies, a cozy reminder of the thing that happened there.
More than 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, died in Auschwitz.
Only in 1944 were half a million Hungarian Jews murdered in Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps.
This included all 72 members of Agnes Darvas's family, her cousins, showers and cousins.
When we reflect on Auschwitz, friendships and stories from survivors like Agnes Darvas remind us of the importance of memory and being vigilant against hatred and the power of fear.
