Phugtal Monastery History
That green village you can see is 3 kms away from here.
Purne village is 3 kms away from here.
There is an off-road from there.
And there is a point here.
And there is an hour's way to the village from here.
Let's see.
We have parked the bike here.
Now we will go.
The fun part is that the monastery is not on road.
You have to trek so much even after going off-grid.
This monastery is built in a cave.
It is not on ground.
It is built in the middle of a steep mountain.
This mountain is also made of mud.
This is the specialty of this monastery.
It is still in its original form.
Since so many years.
Let's know the history of this monastery.
According to history,
2500 years ago,
one of the 16 Arhats of Mahatma Gandhi,
direct disciples,
came here.
He taught 3000 students here.
After that, this place is very sacred for the people here.
this gompa was built here.
There are many rooms for monks in this gompa.
And there are roads like this.
It is said that
many great lamas have come here
for teaching,
practice and meditation.
This is the only monastery
where you still have to walk.
The road is still not fully connected.
To reach here,
you have to hike for an hour
along the river.
Along the Sarabchu river.
To carry the luggage,
you have to walk on horses or donkeys.
Winter is harsh here.
All hiking trails
are unreachable at that time.
There is snow here.
So there is a lot of fear of being slippery.
In winter, it is frozen on this river.
You have to walk on this river
to carry all the luggage.
Then you have to climb up the mountain.
This is the top area
of the monastery.
You can see the view from here.
This is the kitchen of the monastery.
This is the kitchen of the gompa.
This is where all the food is prepared
for the lamas and the visitors.
This is the actual cave
which surrounds the monastery.
This cave is 2500 years old.
It means that
when one of the 16 monks
came here 25 years ago,
he lived here.
We will go upstairs
and see some rooms.
These are the small rooms
where he used to meditate
and give his teachings.
That's all for this video.
We will bring another wonder
for you in the next video.
Till then, July.
