British Chancellor Rachel Reeves over the weekend struck a trades deal with Beijing
worth some $730 million for the UK over the next five years.
She's seeking to deepen economic ties with China amid a broader push by the new Labour
government to reset relations with the Asian nation.
But Reeves faced criticism for her trip as she left the UK amid market turmoil.
Here she is speaking in China.
London's markets are unparalleled for their depth and openness.
No other place in the world has the same concentration of banks, insurers, asset managers, advisors
and legal services.
We are a natural home for China's financial services firms.
Reeves' trip was just as important as the financial crisis, when the interest rates
on British state bonds reached the highest level in 17 years.
This increase means that the British government pays higher interest rates on its own.
It is also a sign that the market's confidence is declining.
The British finance department said in a statement that Great Britain and China agreed
on cooperation in areas such as financial services, trade, investments and the climate.
Bank managers such as Andrew Bailey, head of Bank of England, joined Reeves' delegation.
Bailey and other senior managers from financial companies such as HSBC, Standard Chartered
and London Stock Exchange met with China's central bank chief.
They sought to deepen the financial cooperation and business ties.
Reeves' trip to China had room for the Chinese spy accusations that surfaced last month.
One alleged spy had very close ties to the British Prince Andrew
and another cultivated relations with British parliamentarians.
It also had room for the upcoming President Donald Trump's installation.
Trump is expected to introduce tariffs on all imports, including a 60% tariff on Chinese imports.
The US is Great Britain's largest trading partner, while China is Great Britain's fourth largest.
