Can you assure the world that as you try to get control of these areas you are not going to use
military or economic coercion? No. And can you tell us a little bit about what your plan is?
Are you going to negotiate a new treaty? Are you going to ask the Canadians to hold the vote? What
is the strategy? I can't assure you, you're talking about Panama and Greenland, no I can't
assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security.
The Panama Canal was built for our military. I'm not going to commit to that now, it might
be that you'll have to do something. Look, the Panama Canal is vital to our country. It's being
operated by China. China! And we gave the Panama Canal to Panama, we didn't give it to China.
The Panama Canal is one of the most important waterways in the world. It connects two oceans, the Pacific and the Atlantic.
It has great significance for both defense and global trade, and this has long attracted the Chinese Communist Party.
Panama was the first Latin American country to join China's Belt and Road Initiative in 2017,
also called the New Side Road. The West has criticized the economic development project
for being Beijing's debtor, and says it could lead to China's deep debt, and eventually
be forced to hand over control of ports or other important access to China.
The U.S. built the Panama Canal in 1914 and extended it until 1999, when the then president of the U.S.,
Jimmy Carter, handed over the responsibility to the state of Panama. A treaty between the two countries
gives the U.S. the right to defend the canal with military forces if the country loses its neutrality.
Currently, China is the second largest user of the Panama Canal. A Chinese company headquartered
in Hong Kong controls two of the five ports near the Panama Canal, with one on each side of the
canal. Doesn't that mean China is effectively controlling the Panama Canal? On the surface,
Trump talks about fees, but in reality he is warning Panama to drive out the Chinese Communist Party.
What benefits would purchasing Greenland bring to the United States? It would strengthen U.S. military
and economic influence in the Arctic, especially in countering the growing activities of Russia
and China in the region.
