The Seeds of Honesty

Long ago, there was an aging king who wanted to find a worthy successor to his throne. To do so, he announced a challenge: every citizen would receive a basket of seeds to plant, and the one who harvested the most rice would inherit the throne. But anyone who failed to grow rice would be punished.

Among the citizens was a poor orphan boy named Chom. Grateful for the opportunity, Chom took his seeds and worked hard every day, tending the soil with care and patience. But no matter what he did, the seeds refused to grow.

When harvest time came, everyone gathered at the palace with carts overflowing with rice. Chom, feeling worried and ashamed, brought his empty basket to the king. Kneeling, he said, “Your Majesty, I have failed. I tried my best, but my seeds would not grow.”

The crowd fell silent, surprised by Chom’s honesty. The king gently helped the boy to his feet and asked, “Has anyone else failed to grow rice from the seeds I gave?”

Not a single person spoke. The king smiled and revealed, “Before I gave out the seeds, I boiled them. They could not grow. The rice you see here came from other seeds, not the ones I gave.”

Turning to Chom, the king declared, “Honesty is the most precious quality a leader can have. This boy has shown courage and integrity. I shall pass my throne to him.”

And so, Chom became king. He ruled wisely and kindly, forever remembered as the ruler who proved that honesty triumphs over all.

Dear Kids:
Honesty is like a bright light that makes the world better. When you tell the truth, people can trust you, and trust is a very special gift. Even when being honest feels hard, remember that truthfulness makes you strong, brave, and kind. Always choose honesty—it is the best way to show respect to yourself and others.

Stay true, and shine bright!
