You do not have to be a wine connoisseur in order to be enlightened about wine etiquette.
As an elegant person it is imperative to at least be informed about the basics of wine
do's and don'ts. In this episode I am going to show you exactly that or rather teach you
exactly that. So stay tuned until the end of the episode. Section A I'm going to
tell you about the wine do's and don'ts and section B I'm going to teach you about or
rather give examples of food and wine pairings. The first wine do's and don'ts
wines both red and white wines are to be stored in their right temperatures
otherwise if they are not stored in their right temperatures they may end up having
the wine may end up having a very flat taste or rather a burnt taste which was not originally
intended for the wine. So the temperature in which we store the white wine is different
with the temperature in which we store red wines. Lighter red wines temperature the right
temperature for storage of lighter red wines is 12 to 16 degrees celsius. The right temperature
for heavier red wines like Malbec for instance is 14 to 20 degrees celsius.
The right temperature for full-bodied white wines is 10 to 12 degrees celsius. The right
temperature for light-bodied white wines is 8 to 12 degrees celsius. The right temperature
for sparkling wines and dessert wines is 4 to 8 degrees celsius and the right temperature
for storage of champagne is 7 to 10 degrees celsius. Of course this may vary from place to place
and from person to person this may vary with different with a difference of with a slight
difference of degrees. Of course it doesn't have to be restricted to the ones that I have mentioned
so the first wine do's and don'ts every wine whether red or white wine should be stored
under the right temperature. The second wine do's and don'ts always hold your wine glass
by the stem like I am holding this one and not the bowl. The reason for this is
when you hold your wine glass by the bowl the greases from your fingerprint
will will be left on the wine glass and it will end up missing the wine glass and especially for
us ladies we tend to use a lot of lotions and creams on our hands so when you hold the wine
glass using your fingerprints instead of holding the stem you will end up missing the wine glass
and that is absolutely inelegant. The second reason as to why we need to hold the wine glass by the
stem is to ensure that we don't tamper with the temperature of the wine. If we put our hands on
the bowl it will automatically tamper with the temperature of the wine. The third wine do's and don'ts
make wine drinking an enjoyable experience. The same way you drink wine is not the same way you
drink water or even other soft drinks. Actually every wine has a story and you as a person who's
whenever you're drinking wine you need to take your good time and make it an enjoyable experience
do not rush while tasting take your time hold the wine by the stem hold the wine glass by the stem
swirl gently swirl gently sniff and slowly
slowly sip the wine this is actually when drinking wine to be honest it is allowed to be a little bit
dramatic but when you're doing it do it with a lot of finesse so take your good time and make wine
tasting an enjoyable experience and whenever you're tasting the wine take your time to swirl
swirl with finesse sniff and taste the wine slowly okay so wine drinking should be an enjoyable
experience wine is meant to be savored and not rushed like we sometimes do with water and other
soft drinks and soft drinks rather the fourth wine do and don'ts never ever
fill your wine glass to the rim never ever fill your wine glass to the rim the correct measurement
of wine is always a third a third of the glass to almost half of the glass full but under no
circumstance should the wine glass should your wine glass be filled the reason was as to why
we never fill our wine glass is to always ensure that we create room for the wine to breathe okay
the wine needs to breathe and there has to be enough room in the glass for the wine to breathe
allowing you to experience the aromas fully as originally designed okay i hope that is clear
never ever fill your wine glass until the rim the required measurement is a third of the glass
or nearly a half but not a half okay so that you can create room for the wine to breathe
so that you can fully enjoy the aromas of the wine the other do's and don'ts
maintain wine drinking from the same spot this actually reminds me
when i started going out on dates many years ago when my first my first time being wined and dined
i was totally you know like naive when it comes to matters of wine and i didn't know much about
wine etiquette and i remember i used to drink wine from you know maybe two spots or even three spots
and the wine glass used to be so messy thank god because as time goes we learn this was actually me
many years ago maybe even 10 or 8 years ago so it's always messy and tacky when we drink wine
from different spots of the wine glass always maintain same spots and not don't drink from
different spots otherwise the wine glass will end up being utterly messy the other wine do's
don't drink the wine if it smells either of the following unpleasant odors such as a rotten egg
vinegar damp cardboard mushrooms or even sewage so your wine should never smell
like a damp cardboard sewage burnt rubber rotten egg vinegar or even burnt mushroom and rubber
if it smells any of the following during wine tasting when the waiter brings you the wine
to taste and it smells either of the following please just politely decline and order for a
different wine you can just say something like when the waiter brings the wine and it has given
thank you but i prefer trying a different wine could i please have another alternative
and just smile you don't need to be rude and create any kind of drama so just politely decline
and order for a different wine so your wine should never ever give an unpleasant order
do not cheers by the rim never ever cheers by the rim it's actually very common
but it's very inappropriate cheers by the bone or the bell instead and while clinking glasses
make sure you maintain eye contact with whomever person that you are dining with or even drinking
the wine with so never ever cheers by the rim instead cheers by the bowl and when clinking
the wine glass ensure that you maintain eye contact with your date or even partner or even
whoever friend or whoever it is that you're dining or even having wine with if you're hosting guests
pour wine for your guests first and then pour to oneself after only after pouring to your guests
and when pouring wine to your guests you want to make sure that you're the same amount that you're
going to pour onto your guests wine glasses is similar or even relatively similar to yours
you don't want a scenario whereby you've poured a very less amount of wine on others onto others
glasses and then onto yours it's like a huge amount that will give a very wrong impression
of oneself okay so try to pour a relatively similar or even a similar amount on every
wine glass when pouring a glass of wine for someone hold the bottle at the base
hold the bottle at the base and after pouring the wine rotate quickly quickly rotate quickly
rotate the bottle away from from the wine glass okay so while pouring the wine
once you're done quickly rotate the bottle and while doing that ensure you have like a nicely
folded white napkin so that in case there should be some drips some wine drips there is a napkin
so that the remaining wine drips won't go on someone's outfit or even pour onto someone's
either of your host or even you okay so this i think is also vital for especially if you're
a waiter or someone in the service industry like maybe you you do a lot of wine serving
serving and all that it's important to note that you need to hold the wine bottle by the base
and then after pouring quickly rotate the wine and then ensure that you always have
a white folded a white nicely folded napkin
lastly the use of the right type of wine glass the glass the wine glass that you serve red wine
is different from the wine glass that you use to serve champagne as well as the one that you
use to serve white wine so the glasses are always different normally the glass for serving
red wine is always it always has a larger surface areas
yeah like this one some something similar to this but it's even more larger than this
so the glass of serving white wine should be quite should have quite a larger surface area
compared to the wine glass used to serve white wine white wine it's always medium this is
actually perfect for serving white wine it's always medium the surface area is medium and
champagne it's always served on classic flutes which are rather very narrow and very slim
with an extended and narrow and larger and narrow stem so i hope that is clearly noticed
serve wine the right one wine glass on the appropriate serve each and every wine glass
on its appropriate glass for red wine the surface area is always quite huge for white wines the
surface area is medium and for champagnes and prosecco the surface area it's always classic
champagne flutes and it's always narrow or rather slimmer and the stem is always quite elongated
unlike the stem of the red wine and white wine section b we are going to talk about food and
wine pairing so you might want you might want to pair full-bodied red wine like like for instance
malbec with food items such as barbecued meats steaks sweet chocolates and also lamb chops they
pair very well with full-bodied red wines like for instance malbec medium-bodied red wines
pair well like for instance melo yeah i hope i'm pronouncing it correctly like for instance
melo melo pairs well medium-bodied red wines pair well with tomato-based pasta meat-based pasta
red meat and some white meats
light-bodied red wine like shiraz i think this is shiraz yeah this is shiraz so light-bodied
red wines like this one shiraz pairs very well with food items like lean red meats fatty fish
and even grilled meat sparkling wines and champagnes pair well with food items like
salted nuts and this makes sense have you noticed when you actually go to a restaurant
and they serve you champagne i mean when they serve you champagnes and sparkling wines they
are always giving you salted nuts and also when you are flying business class or even first class
the flight attendant whenever they are serving you champagnes often offer you salted nuts and
this is because they blend perfectly with champagnes whenever they are serving you champagnes
so sparkling wines and champagnes absolutely pair well with food items like salted nuts and along
with that it also pairs well with caviar it also pairs well with smoked salmon cheese as well
but of course it depends with the type of cheese and it also pairs well with
roasted vegetables and grilled fish
now let's go to rich white wines rich white wines like for instance chardonnay which is my favorite
oh my goodness i love chardonnay when it comes to white wines and when it comes to red wines i love
malbec yeah malbec and sometimes bordeaux as well for red wine so okay rich white wine like
for instance chardonnay it blends perfectly with food items like chicken turkey sushi
creamy pasta and grilled lobster sweet white wine sweet white wine like the german riesling
blends perfectly with any kind of desserts to continue dry white wines like sauvignon blanc
blends perfectly with nicely cooked roasted vegetables it also blends well with fish
and it also blends perfectly with oysters so the list could go on and on and of course we have
varying taste buds and varying palates so to someone what certain food items might blend
perfectly for them with certain kind of wines whereas to another it may just be
utterly different preferences so these are just bad examples but of course
the rules are not restricted different people have different palates and of course it's always
allowed to try to try different blending different foods and wines whatever it is that
works best for you of course it's allowed for you to to go with that so that was it for this episode
