Have you ever wanted to know how to make a chain tassel?
I am going to show you today how to make this wonderful chain
tassel. Now the reason I'm making this is I have this old necklace,
this one here, and it has a chain tassel on it
but it's had it. It needs to be replaced and so I thought I'd show you
how I made the chain tassel as I go along. Now I'm not making the necklace
today, just the tassel. So let's walk you step by step through
what you need and how to make this chain tassel.
In terms of tools, you will need a pair of flush cutters,
you will need two pairs of chain nose pliers and a pair of round nose pliers
and you will need a little ruler with centimeters on it
or inches if you want to work in inches, up to you. Okay
I'll just pop those tools out of the way for a sec.
As far as materials are concerned, you will need
1.5 meters of chain. This one is a 2.2 millimeter chain so it is really fine.
You'll also need a six millimeter bead cap. Now this bead cap,
it has a large hole in the top but that's not necessary. The necessary
part is that it is quite long in the shank
part, in this part of the bead cap. This is a six millimeter silver bead and
I'm going to pop that on top of the bead cap just to finish it off.
I also have five centimeters of 20 gauge wire.
So here's my tassel and I'm going to put it just down here so that we can
have a look at it as we're working through. Now what you will need to do
first is cut your chain. Now I've actually pre-cut some of mine
but I am going to show you how to do it anyway. So I'll just pop that over there.
Now I have my chain off on my roll here, off to the side.
My chain, I cut 10 pieces at 15 centimeters.
So what I'm going to do here is just lay it down alongside of my ruler
and I'm going to take my flush cutters while it's still down on the ground
and just give it a little cut. Now I don't need my ruler anymore
because what I'm going to do is I'm going to measure all of my others
off this one piece. I'm going to leave my chain lying down
and I'm going to take my other piece of chain and lie it down beside.
And I actually am going to pull it a little bit higher than that and then
pull it down so that it straightens itself out,
just slowly, so that they're about even. Now don't stress if you're,
you don't need to worry link for link. It's not that serious if one is a little
bit longer than the other. All right now I'm going to take my
flush cutters and I'm going to cut about where the other piece is.
Oops, now I've pulled it too far so I'll pull it back.
There we go and just grab it in the cutters, put my finger over it so it
doesn't fly and hit me in the eye and just cut.
So that's how you cut your chain. Now as I said I've already cut mine
to save time so I'll just lay it out there.
This is an antique silver chain so it's not bright silver
and it kind of goes better with these bead caps.
As always I'll leave a link in the description box below with all of the
requirements, all the materials, links to all the materials that you
need. All right now I'm going to take my wire
and I'm going to make a loop in the end. So here's my round nose pliers and I want
quite a large loop. So I'm going to put the wire between the
jaws but quite a long way up from the end.
Just make sure that the wire isn't sticking up above the jaws
so that you can't feel it and then holding your
wire between your thumb and your forefinger, just twist
your pliers away from you as far as your wrist will go.
Remove the pliers, put them back in and then twist some more.
And you will feel when the wire meets, the end of the wire meets the side of
the wire there. Now what you're going to do is take your
finger and your thumb and hold that stem of the wire and just
twist back slightly. And the reason that you're doing that
is so that your loop is centered on your, on the wire there. Now my loop
isn't closed but I'm not worried about that
because I actually will need to open it to put the chain on so
I'll close it later. What I do want to do though is make sure that my
my loop isn't open wide because if I take my chain nose pliers and I
open the loop wide what will happen is that
chains will fall off when I put them on. Okay so
what I'm going to do next is I'm going to find the center of these chains
and I'm going to thread them on. Now the easiest way I found is to find the
center is actually to thread the ends on
and once you've got the ends on just hang it and then run your fingers down
and you'll find that the center loop actually pops
itself out so it makes itself its presence quite well known.
Now thread on the end of your wire. Now notice that I'm using the long end and
not the loop and what you just want to do is make
sure that you can get the chain down through the
the gap in the loop. And I'm going to do that
a few more times. When you hold the, when you have the chain on the loop
make sure you hold it so that the gap in the loop
is up because you don't want the chains to fall off and just hold
the loop between your thumb and your forefinger
and thereby holding the chains on as well. If you don't want to thread it on
like this you can actually just make sure that the
chain is long enough or that the the ends are about the same length and you
can just hang it like that if you wanted to.
last one that the loop is quite full so just be
very careful not to throw or push the
chain off the other side. So that's what I have
and you can see there's not much room there.
Now I need to somehow close up the loop and this is a little bit of a challenge
and it kind of breaks the rules of how you normally close up a loop.
What I'm going to do is I'm going to take the point of my pliers and just
attach it to that little bit there that's sticking out
and the same with the side. Now normally you would hold
the loop on the side rather than
like this but it's kind of a do anything you can situation to get it
closed and you see I put down my pliers, one
pair of pliers because that wasn't working for me so I'm just
holding it in my fingers and pushing it. Now when you're closing it if you need
to you can actually just give it a squeeze this way because
nobody's going to see this loop it doesn't have to be perfectly round.
So as I said we break the rules in this in this particular project.
All that matters is that that loop is really well closed so that the chain
can't come out and you want a nice
crisp bend at the top of your loop. So that's what I have. All right
so that's the hard bit done and you'll see here that my
chains aren't exactly the same length but that's okay.
It just, you can trim them if you want to but I don't think it,
I think it looks fine. Now I've put on my bead cap
and I'm going to put on my six millimeter bead.
So that's what I have now and all that's left to do is to create the loop
that finishes off the tassel. All right so to do that I'm going to
take my chain nose pliers and make a
right angle bend just at the top of that bead.
Like that. Now I'm going to take my ruler
and I'm going to measure about a centimeter from
the bend and I'm going to cut my wire and the reason I'm measuring it is so
that I get a nice, the right size loop. You don't have to
measure it. Using, cutting my wire using the flush
side of my cutters. Now I'm going to take my round nose
pliers and make a loop and I'm making quite a
large loop again in this one. So putting the wire between the jaws,
making sure it's not sticking up and just turning my hand away,
repositioning and rotating the rest of the way.
All right so there's my tassel. So here we go,
two tassels and yes they'd make quite nice earrings
or they might make a great focal for a necklace.
Up to you. All righty, I hope you've enjoyed this project. It was a nice quick
one and if you have please subscribe to my
channel and like the video and of course ring the bell so that you'll be notified
every time I upload a new project which is usually once a week and of
course check us out on Instagram and Facebook. I'll leave the links in the
description below and also links for everything you need to
make these tassels. Also leave me a comment and let me know
if you made the tassel and what you did with it once you've
once you made it. You know, did you make earrings? Did you make a necklace? What
did you do? Maybe you put it made a little one for a
bracelet. Who knows? Anyway thanks for watching. Have a
fantastic day. I'll see you again soon.
