ladies and gentlemen this is Joe's
classic video games back with another
really cool jukebox video for you this
evening it's pouring down the rain
outside so you might be able to hear
that in the background but uh this is
Rock ola's
490 Super Sound
jukebox this came out in about
1984 we just got this thing in the other
day and got it all fixed up and I'm
going to play it for you so you can see
what they sound like a little bit
because it'll be playing through my
phone
and then you know we're putting it on
YouTube so YouTube's encoder kind of
messes with the audio a little bit and
then it plays through your phone speaker
or your computer speaker and so that's
not anything like it being here in
person but we figured we'd film a video
of it anyway and i' show you a little
bit about um how the thing is set up
inside now this is the 490 I believe
it's a 490
-1 they also made a 490
d224 490 or a 490 D1 the 4901 was was
called The Horizon Blue model so that
may be what this is because the uh the
tile strip board is blue but uh it's got
a really cool little light show I'll
show you it here uh in a minute with the
lights off so you can see how it looks
if you were to run across one in a bar
in
1984 it's got this uh this one's a
little damaged but it's got
this strange kind of record look on the
side with these little bejweled inserts
you know that the light kind of shines
out in the dark it's kind of cool the
blue t- molding I think we put on I
think originally that was black um of
course this is how it was originally uh
there's little tiny light bulbs behind
that that you can remove and then
they're mirrored up here too there's
also some little light bulbs up here and
so if you look they dance across and
they
the one at the top and the one at the
bottom are off at the same time as it
goes
across cool little
look and of course this side is a mirror
of the other side it's in a little
better shape than the other side and
we've got a little coin
door uh door down there that you take
off so you've got coin insert here
usually there's a little thing sticking
out here that you can press to get a
refund
um rockola Super Sound Auto Select plays
up to 10 hits it says view the top hit
10 hit the top hits and this says Auto
Select top hits so if you press that
button this one's pushed in there's a
little switch on the back of that we use
to fix one of these buttons so it's not
it doesn't work anymore hardly anybody
use that feature but if you do hit that
button it plays up to top 10 hits so you
would put money in and then hit that
button and it would just automatically
play whatever's been played the most in
the in the location
um it's showing you that the top hit
right now is number 100 now I think
that's probably needs to be reset
because uh uh we put a new battery in
the computer that keeps track of all
that so it must have uh that's kind of
its generic setting and then plays when
it's on 99 that means it's on free play
you've got a little light here that will
light up to say selection playing you've
got one that will say your selection and
then you've got one that'll light up
that say add coins and these little
things here could be swapped out this is
basically just telling you how much it
is per per
song you could get your regular keyboard
here and reset in case you hit the wrong
button like if you try to start with a
eight it's going to say error because
none of them start with eight so you hit
reset it clears that you've got two
little smaller speakers up here they
look like they're
fives and then you've got two down at
the bottom that I
believe they look like tens maybe um let
me see if I can open it up and show show
you the inside if I can do it with one
hand all right I pulled it off people I
knew we'd get through it
together so you've got a little bar here
that holds it up on some of the other
models they use these little gas
struts we were just doing a whiter video
the other day and it used the gas strut
and those things were out after a while
but a solid metal bar doesn't usually
wear out so that works pretty good so
you've got down here your power supply
it's where the voltage comes in and then
goes back out to everything else they
call it the power distribution on the
front there um and they they were really
good about numbering all of their parts
so this is 54920 d a and so you could
look in the manual and see which how
many different machines use
that um and so the p over here you've
got the coin
Mech uh for the
coins uh I guess that little button
thing is just missing that you press
this in because all of this stuff is
still there so if you lose a quarter
people you're just going to lose it um
this little thing here was a hopper for
dollar bills so you could put a dollar
bill acceptor in here and it would feed
the dollars into there down into the
cash box these were the cool dollar bill
acceptors with the little tray where you
had to lay them down flat and then push
them in remember those they were they
were at a lot of uh like car washes and
stuff for a long time you've got a
little mechanism board here that runs
the the mech and everything of course
you got a big light bulb there you've
got another big light bulb there you've
got some connectors down there where you
can uh plug in external speakers so the
the amplifier was strong enough that it
could drive more than the speakers that
are in the actual box and this is the
amplifier here these were really easy to
work on they have little boards inside
of them that you can take out it's real
compartmentalized so you can um adjust
the left side and the right side and all
that and then this was their computer
system so you see it says system 2
control unit they only used these on
like three or four boxes and then they
moved on to a system 3 control unit that
they only used on a few boxes so these
are it's a little tricky working on
those but um you can see there's a
ribbon cable coming out of the top
coming up here to the keyboard This is
the back side of the keyboard where you
press the buttons and pick your song um
and then you've got some plugs there
this little plug here we were having
trouble with the power so I actually
made a different connector to make sure
that the power was getting the board all
right and that ended up not even being
the problem so I wasted a bunch of time
there and then you've got rock ola's
standard mechanism here which worked
great and they're they're easy to work
on if you've worked on a bunch of them
if you worked on other rockolas you know
how those work um we'll have to do a
video one day showing how to fix some of
that
stuff um you can see the two speakers we
were talking about the five I think
those are
fives and then the the two big ones are
actually down at the bottom you can't
you can't easily get to them your title
strip board you can actually hit these
little things here and this hangs down
in front of you so you can change the
the titles out and everything what else
was I going to show
you
H there was something else I was going
to talk
about what was it what was
it I don't remember so there you go that
is a rock all 4901 now the best part
about a rockola is the way it sounds
right so you want to hear it so let me
put it back down
whoa
byby you certainly want to hear it
right so what I'll do is I'll turn the
lights off and then uh I'll show you
what it looks like in the dark and we'll
play it a little bit now I'll do that on
a separate video that I'm uploading
right now you don't have to wait or
anything just click on the other video
because sometimes whenever you play
Somebody's music on YouTube they get mad
and they have your video blocked and I
don't want this part of the video
blocked where I'm showing the the game
the the Jukebox off so leave your
comments below give us a thumbs up for
taking the trouble to film it for you
and uh click the other video that you
see below so that you can uh you can
hear what this thing sounds like
