This is where the fastest, most explosive cars on the planet battle it out, reaching insane speeds of over 341 miles per hour in just 1,000 feet—yes, you heard that right! These rockets on wheels go from 0 to 100 miles per hour in under 1 second— as fast as the blink of an eye. Top Fuel dragster engines are some of the most powerful engines on earth, delivering an astounding ten thousand plus horsepower! But how do they achieve these seemingly fantasy-world type power figures?

The 500 cubic inch, or 8.2 liter, engines are based on second generation Chrysler RB Hemi engines. However, while these heavily regulated engines have their roots in the Hemi, practically all of the parts used in Top Fuel dragsters are specially designed and manufactured. You might think that more than eight cylinders would be required for these power figures, but 90-degree V8’s are what you’ll find powering these cars. It’s important to note that these one-of-a-kind engines cannot be found in any production cars, or in any other vehicles for that matter. They’re only seen in the intense world of Top Fuel drag racing and are used by some of the most iconic drivers and teams in the sport.

This heart-pounding sport, which sees drivers race side by side in their mad dash one thousand feet to the finish line is nothing to scoff at. Sure, it may seem like it’s just a short race in a straight line, but Top Fuel drag racing is one of the most precise and exhilarating forms of motorsport on the planet. It’s the closest a man or woman can get to being in a fighter jet, while still remaining on the ground.
