Hello everyone. This is Minzy from Now Korean Podcast.
Are you guys studying Korean well?
I upload Korean class videos and podcasts on YouTube every week.
Is my video helping you guys to study Korean?
It's not easy to learn a new language.
I don't think Korean is an easy language, especially for me, a Korean teacher.
So I think it's amazing that you guys are studying Korean hard.
When I look at my students, I don't think they're that difficult.
But as they go up to the intermediate level, they say that Korean is really difficult.
There are so many similar grammar.
I don't improve my skills quickly.
They say a lot of things like this.
So for intermediate students,
Not only grammar and vocabulary,
How to speak more naturally like a Korean
And I teach them expressions that Koreans actually use a lot.
To put it simply, I teach them how to pretend to be good at Korean.
If you know these things, you'll feel like you're better at Korean.
You won't lose interest in Korean.
You can actually use Korean more naturally.
So today, I'm going to tell you how to pretend to be good at Korean.
Of course, it's important to study Korean really hard and improve your Korean skills.
But if you're still not good enough and you have to speak Korean,
Or if you don't feel like your Korean skills are improving,
If you watch today's video, I think it'll help you study Korean a little bit.
So let's start today's story right now.
How to pretend to be good at Korean
What should I do to look like I'm good at Korean?
You can think of it as listening to Korean well and speaking it well.
So today's story is about how to listen to Korean well and how to speak it well.
I'm going to explain it in two ways.
First of all, in order to look like you're listening well, you have to react well.
Even if you don't understand all the conversation,
If you react well, it can look like you understand all the conversation.
So how do Koreans react?
If you want to react like a Korean, you only need to know two expressions.
그래 and 진짜
When the other person talks, they say,
Oh, yeah? Oh, really?
Let's take the example of Koreans talking comfortably with their friends.
My friend is talking and I'm listening to him.
I went on a blind date last week after a long time.
But that guy wasn't exactly my style.
Oh, yeah?
Or
I have a crush on someone these days.
Really?
Like this.
At this point, you don't ask if the other person's words are real.
It shows that you're listening to the other person's story.
So even if you keep talking,
Oh, really?
Oh, yeah?
You can use it alternately.
Oh, really?
Or
Awesome!
You can keep talking even if you use these expressions.
I went on a blind date last week after a long time.
But that guy wasn't exactly my style.
Oh, yeah?
Anyway, I met him at a cafe.
As soon as he saw me, he said he was similar to his ideal type.
Really?
Awesome!
But after talking to him,
He's more like me than I thought.
Oh, really?
So we decided to meet again next time.
Really?
Awesome!
Like this.
Of course, depending on the situation,
I might have to talk a little more.
If you react too much like this,
You might feel like you're reacting without soul.
You can feel that the other person is listening to his story roughly.
So if you react too much like this,
My friend said,
Do you have a soul now?
You can ask this question.
Then, is there any way to react easily without feeling like this?
Yes, there is.
It's a reaction using the verb the other person uses.
I went on a blind date last week.
If you say that,
Did you go on a blind date?
You're using the other person's words like this.
Or even on a blind date,
I like to go to a pretty cafe.
Oh, do you like to go to a cafe?
You like to go to a cafe.
You can react like this.
If you do this,
It looks like you're empathizing with the other person's words.
But my MBTI is ENFJ.
I like to watch movies.
My ideal type is a kind person.
A kind person is my ideal type.
If you use it too much like this,
You can feel like you're talking to a robot.
It's like talking to an AI, not a person.
So it's important to use this kind of reaction in the middle of the conversation rather than using it too much.
Like the expression I introduced earlier,
There are many words that can be used in many situations.
It's 어 or 네.
If you look at SNS these days,
When Koreans talk on the phone,
From beginning to end,
It's amazing that you only use 어 or 네.
You can see a lot of short videos.
In fact, you can talk in 어 or 네.
Because these two words
Depending on the pitch of the note, the meaning changes.
For example, if a friend calls,
I went on a blind date yesterday.
But I liked him.
But he hasn't contacted me since the blind date.
It turns out that he had a girlfriend.
Knowing this, I felt so bad.
Wait a minute. I'm getting a call from my mom.
I'll call you back later. Bye.
If you change the tone a little bit with just one letter,
It's a conversation.
Because 어 is informal at this time,
When you talk to someone older than me,
You can change it to 네.
Just by using 어 and 네 well like this,
Even if you don't make a sentence,
When you talk to a Korean person,
You can show that you're listening to the other person well.
The second way to pretend to be good at Korean is to speak well.
As I told you earlier,
You can't just listen and react.
So I'm trying to talk.
When you don't know what to say,
You only need to know these three words.
These three words are also used a lot by Koreans when they start speaking.
It's a magic word.
It's no, but it's real.
These three words can be used in any situation in front of a sentence.
At this time, these words have no meaning.
When you just start talking without any meaning,
It plays a more natural role.
But these words shouldn't be used when talking to someone older than you.
It's better to use it only when you're talking comfortably with your friends.
For example, when you tell your friend about your blind date,
I went on a blind date last week.
Rather than saying,
No, I went on a blind date last week.
It's a little more natural to talk like this.
Or
No, but I went on a blind date last week.
You can say this.
And 진짜 is used to emphasize sentences.
For example,
I don't know why I'm so tired these days.
When you say that,
Oh, I don't know why I'm so tired these days.
This is how you say it.
Or
No, I don't know why I'm so tired these days.
No, but I really don't know why I'm so tired these days.
You can use three words at once like this.
If you use these expressions at the right time and start talking,
It can look like you're speaking Korean much more naturally.
I've introduced some expressions that help you start talking naturally.
Not these expressions.
You can start talking while calling the other person.
Minji, did you eat?
Like this.
In Korea, there are so many different nicknames for the other person.
There's also a honorific culture.
It's really important to use the right nickname for the situation and the other person.
So when I speak,
Even if you make a little mistake in grammar,
If you use the right nickname,
It can look like you're better at Korean.
On the other hand,
No matter how good you are at Korean,
If the nickname is wrong,
I think you might think you're not good at Korean.
Korean nicknames vary from person to person.
You have to study separately to know all the nicknames.
So today,
I'm going to introduce you to one of the most useful nicknames that can be used all over the place in most situations.
I'll introduce you to an expression that you can use when you don't know the nickname well, but you have to talk.
The first useful nickname.
The nickname that can be used in most situations is
It's the boss.
The boss means the person who represents the store or the company.
I told you in the podcast about how to use Korean restaurants.
Regardless of whether the person is a part-time worker, an employee, or a boss,
You can use it for everyone who works in a restaurant.
It's because I think it's a nickname that increases the other person's position.
Not only restaurants,
Anyone who looks a little older than me outside the restaurant can use it.
However, if you look like a student or wear a school uniform,
It's a little awkward to call you the boss.
So in this case, it's usually better to call you a student.
Next, it's a word you can use when you don't know the nickname well, but you have to talk.
It's an excuse.
저기요 is not a nickname or a noun.
Actually, it's an exclamation.
So rather than calling someone,
It's used to omit the nickname and talk.
So people who don't know what to call it,
You can use it in any situation, such as the first person you see.
When you order at a restaurant or travel,
You can use it whenever you talk to someone you don't know.
It's a nuance similar to the English excuse me.
You can use it in a situation where you have to be polite and talk.
Even if it's not 저기요,
You can start talking by saying 저기.
For example,
저기 여기 화장실이 어디에 있어요?
아니면 저기 강남역으로 가려면 어디로 가야 해요?
Like this.
The next way to make it look like you're speaking Korean well is to emphasize it.
To emphasize it at this time,
It's to make it more fun to express Korean pronouns and adverbs.
You can emphasize the meaning and feel of the sentence
by pronouncing the adverb or pronoun a little stronger or longer.
For example,
The bank is over there.
When you say this sentence,
To emphasize that it's far,
You can pronounce 저기 a little longer and stronger.
The bank is over there.
Like this.
If you say it like this,
You can express that the bank is much farther than you think.
Also, the bank is far away.
The bank is far away.
If you express it like this,
You can convey the meaning that the bank is really far away.
And you can use this expression when you're chatting or writing a message.
If you want to emphasize the sentence more when you write a message,
You can pronounce it as it is.
진짜
저기
You can write it like this.
But it's not that you can use these three and long pronunciations
in all words and all expressions.
There are almost no words you can use.
Most of the expressions that can be emphasized like this are organized here.
You can speak much more naturally if you use these expressions well.
Let me give you some examples of how to emphasize these words.
Wow, this building is huge.
Even if you say the same sentence like this,
Even if you change the way you express the adverb a little bit,
You can make the sentence feel better.
If you say this,
Even if you lack the ability or grammar to make a sentence,
Even if you lack a little bit,
You can make it look like you're much better at Korean.
Today, we talked about how to pretend to be good at Korean.
Was it helpful?
I think there are a lot of ways to pretend to be good at Korean other than the methods we talked about today.
Even if you don't speak or listen to Korean well,
If you act like a Korean,
I think it looks like you're a little better at Korean.
For example, when Koreans eat food,
Wow, it's delicious.
In addition to this expression,
It also expresses that it is delicious just by reacting or dancing.
For example, when you drink a cool drink like beer or cider,
You can express the feeling that the beer is so cool and delicious just by making the sound.
And after eating hot or spicy soup,
It also expresses that it is spicy and delicious by making the sound.
Even if you don't have Korean grammar, pronunciation, or vocabulary,
If you study Korean and observe various non-linguistic expressions of Koreans,
It will be a great help to improve your Korean skills.
I've organized it so that you can see and remember what I've told you today.
If you practice with screenshots,
It will help you speak Korean more naturally.
Thank you so much for listening to our podcast today.
