All right, he is a two-time winner of America's Got Talent and this weekend
He'll be launching his new Las Vegas residency at the Mirage. It's Shin Lim. Welcome!
Thank you so much for having me. First off, the hair game, by the way, brother. You are on point, my friend.
It's just the lazy man's haircut. Is that what it is? Yeah, I just wake up and just go about your day.
How did everything start? How did you get into magic? I should say sleight of hand. Sure, sure. I started when I was 16.
I was super bored. My older brother showed me a really simple card trick
and he was like, oh, you can go on YouTube, learn all the basic stuff.
And so I did that because I thought I thought magic would get me a girlfriend to be honest. And did it work?
Not at first because it turns out you have to talk to women.
Oh, yeah, I wasn't very good at that.
So, yeah, no, I just I just did. It became an obsession and I just kept practicing over and over again.
And it was something I was good at so I kept doing it. I heard something. You used to play the piano?
Yeah, I was mainly a pianist in university, played since I was nine years old, went to college,
but then midway through I got carpal tunnel in both my hands.
So then I had to I had to withdraw and not do that. And then get into sleight of hand, get into magic.
Yeah, all I had at that point was magic. So I was like, what am I gonna do with my life?
I might as well just do magic. When you tell your parents, hey, I'm gonna do magic. What's their reaction?
I mean, you know, they're Asian parents. So you can imagine what their reaction is. They were a little upset.
Yeah, I mean, they're like, what's this magic thing guys?
Like you're gonna do something real with your life or what?
So I was pretty much living in my parents basement for a couple of years.
Well, like practicing my craft.
Things have changed because you go to America's Got Talent, a two time winner.
Did you have a game plan when he went on that show?
Try to just be as ready as possible. I think try to be prepared to move to the next round.
So hypothetically, if I had made it, you should have a routine set in mind.
That's what I had planned. So that was kind of my game plan moving forward.
Other than that, try to be as different as possible from the previous magicians.
Watching you, though, I feel like you started out strong and then every trick you did after that was better and better and better.
That's right. A lot of people come in and they come out with their A game and then it seems to drop down as each one goes on.
Hey, you know my strategy. That's your strategy.
That was my strategy. Yeah, you could see it because you're good.
Yeah. Oh, thank you very much.
OK, so you've got the new show starting this weekend at the Mirage.
That's right. Terry Fader's Theatre. Terry Fader Theatre.
Did Terry give you any advice?
Yeah, just have fun. Don't take it too seriously.
And if you mess up, whatever, it's all right.
That's right. It's going to have fun. It's a good time.
There's Vegas. OK, well, you're here.
Can you mind doing something for us?
Sure. Yeah, you told me I need to put this down.
Yeah, I know. I mean, your hands have your hands flat like this.
All right. Very good. OK, cool.
Can you just raise it up just a tiny bit and then just slowly just close it up very slowly?
OK, good. Now just slowly drop one hand.
Doesn't matter what you drop. It's all right. Drop a hand.
Yeah. OK, cool. Now you just make that.
Keep it close. Make sure I don't go anywhere near your hand.
OK, I'm going to draw an X right over here.
Make sure the camera can see that.
We got the X. Very good.
Now watch the X.
See, this is how most of what magicians do is we can actually somehow remove the ink.
Oh, my gosh, it's gone. Like this.
You can kind of see it.
It's really small, but I didn't I didn't touch you at all.
No. Oh, no. OK, good.
No, you do not. OK.
All I have to do is I just let go and the ink actually manages to land into
and open it up slowly and show the camera.
No, it doesn't look like. Yeah, I should be there.
How? How did you look?
It's right there.
Oh, my God. I hear it's here. Back to three.
Oh, my God. It's there. How did you do that?
That's interesting. Awesome. Thank you so much.
How did you do that? I don't know.
Did anyone say that you did not touch my hand?
That is amazing.
That's why you have a show at the Mirage.
Maybe. OK, we have time.
How much time do we have? Oh, we got a wrap.
Oh, can I do my trick for you? Yeah, my card trick.
So I got a regular deck of cards here.
And what you're going to do is pull a card out of the top of the deck.
OK, the top. OK, top of the deck.
Pull a card out. Very, very narrow selection.
That's why you dig deep. Oh, and you're a topper.
Oh, right. OK, show everyone near the top.
You're near the top.
So show the audience at home.
All right. I'm not looking.
Uh-huh. I place it towards maybe the bottom of the deck.
OK. OK. Place it in there.
I'll go like this.
And was your card.
This one right here. Yeah.
Yeah. Congratulations. Thank you.
Is that going to be my assistant at the Mirage?
Come on. The most basic magic trick where I have all the red cards
in the top and the black ones on the bottom. Very intuitive.
I do my trick right there. So that's it.
Thank you so much for joining us. I think it was a lot of fun.
