Today I am in Malta for the first ever urban enduro race in Europe. This is a very special race,
very unique, currently stood in a huge fort where we have six stages lined up,
racing through streets, tight staircases, narrow alleyways.
We're going to jump in for day one of practice here in Malta for the urban enduro.
Air flow.
I like the hop over the ramp.
You just need to go through like two doors which are not even able to walk through.
I think that would actually be funnier,
that we'd have to go through the doors and then down there.
Wheel is sliding everywhere.
Oh, I got tyre marks on it.
Yeah, you need to just like let it go straight and turn at the end.
Yeah, I'm not touching.
Oh yeah, that's a good idea.
Can you use it like go really wide?
Because there's plenty of grip on this.
On that?
Yeah, you can go full speed.
Yeah.
Get your GoPro.
Oh, GoPro.
How stiff have you got your guys' suspension set up? Pretty stiff?
Yeah, like really stiff.
Yeah.
Really stiff and fast.
Fast, yeah.
Yeah, but it depends, like some guys are riding with slow because they like it better, but
you know, faster on the stairs just makes you go faster.
It's more nervous, but it makes you go faster.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And what about pressures in tyres, like the high 20s?
I am almost on 40s.
Almost 40.
Here, you should go lower.
I'm like 35 here.
Yeah.
But still, you know, on the stairs there's such a compressions.
Yeah.
That wants to go really lower.
Or then you can go for a crash course, go way lower.
Have you got a crash course, no?
No.
Not a single one?
No.
Not here, like normally I have.
But then the way it would crash course, it doesn't accelerate it fast, doesn't go that fast.
Yeah.
Depends on your style.
Yeah.
But I'm going like really high pressures.
A little lower gear there.
Yeah.
Too quick?
Yeah.
Then you've got a, I don't know, felt like I was worrying more about braking after.
Yeah.
You lock up hard after that drop.
Yeah.
Into the corner.
Big black tire marks on the floor.
I like that.
Yeah.
All right, so that's practice stage one done.
Now we're going to go and race that stage.
And then we'll move on to practice of stage two.
Oh, God.
Christ.
Wow.
I nearly slid out big time.
Go on, Sam.
Get it.
That was stage one down.
It is so slippy.
I don't know if you saw in that corner.
Nearly went down.
I don't know if it's marble or something, but there's like no traction.
You have to be really, really gentle with braking.
Otherwise, you just slide like I did.
So we're going to go back up now, get a drink, and then we'll practice stage two.
What are you going to do first around the quarter pipe?
Flip fakie.
Sweet.
Stage two.
Hey.
New bit now.
There's a hose pipe.
They've got to block that.
No one's going to hit the ramp.
No, but they should tape it so you have to hit it.
You've got to take that because it's stupid.
I saw you slide.
Is that on the quarter pipe?
The quarter, you go quite high on.
The quarter pipe is like easy, easy.
You're like, yeah, I'm in there.
And then in the last 20 centimeters, you're making like, bah.
Follow in.
That's much harder, actually, that track.
Yeah.
There's so many slippy spots.
Five, four, three, two, one, go.
So a bit of a problem after the second fraction of the stage.
I've somehow cracked the rim of my bike.
There's a big crack across the rim.
I'm going to put an inner tube in now.
But my problem is I don't know how long that is going to last the rest of the race
and whether it's just going to give way at a random point down all these rough, harsh
stairs.
So who knows what's going to happen for the rest of the day?
All right, we're back rolling.
Only thing is, the first run I'll be testing this wheel on will be the next race run.
Fingers crossed it stays up for the next three stages today.
I hope this wheel survives.
Five, four, three, two, one, go.
Let's go.
Oh, look at that, I'm picking him out.
So tight down there.
Look at that.
All right, dude, you've just completed the first ever day two.
Literally, I think that explains what this course is like.
How are we feeling?
Pretty out of breath now.
That was quite a big sprint.
A lot longer than day one.
So you really have to be on the pedals at the corners and trying to maximize efficiency.
Really hard that.
Cool racing through tunnels though.
And the people here are cool.
Watching some good crowds.
Was it a good audience attraction?
Nice, here we go.
Yeah, there's a fair bit of traction.
There's a few slippy bits on the marble floor or whatever it is.
But for the most part, it's pretty grippy.
Just got to keep your balance right and your body position right and you're good to go.
And how do you think you did?
No idea.
Literally no idea.
Racing so tight here.
I think everyone will be within like one or two, maybe three seconds.
All right, well, best of luck, dude.
Cheers, thanks.
Thank you very much.
I thought it was quite fun.
Yeah, I actually really like that.
Yeah.
Do you know how to make these gears like...
No.
Okay.
Get a belt.
Yeah, oh, ****, yeah.
If you handled it, it'd be way quicker.
It would, wouldn't it?
I was five there as if I was...
Six?
Four max.
That's actually much better than pushing.
Go outside, outside.
Yeah, that's where I'm going to go.
Okay.
Did you clear the pedal?
I hit the wall.
I saw the wall and then did you like just get all off balance?
I looked back and then fell off.
You said, ****.
Nice boys.
That was too good.
Yeah, that was wild.
Mate, that's it.
The jumps are good on there as well.
Yeah.
I like that, that was good.
Hold up.
Ready then?
Yeah, do it.
Get it.
Let's go.
Five, four, three, two, one.
Go.
Last stage of the day.
Five, four, three, two, one.
