Why The German Team Covered Their Mouths Before Their World Cup Match.mp4
Jan 2, 2025
Hey, how's it going? My name's Nat. Let's see what's making news.
Germany have staged a protest before their first match at the FIFA World Cup with all 11 players covering their mouths in their pre-game photo.
So, what's it all about?
Before their kickoff against Japan, Germany covered their mouths in protest and it's all over this.
Yep, an armband.
Before the cup, the captains of seven European nations were set to wear rainbow armbands.
As a symbol of support for the LGBTIQ plus community and to raise awareness of wider social injustice in Qatar.
There are strict laws there that discriminate against the LGBTIQ plus community and same-sex relationships are illegal.
Which is why teams like the Socceroos made their own statements about the situation in the lead-up to the World Cup.
But in response to the armbands, FIFA threatened to issue yellow cards to players.
Asking them not to mix sport with politics.
I just think it's a shame that it's not happening because it's just a fight against discrimination all around the world.
We all wanted Harry to wear it, but I think the decision got to our hands as a squad.
Imagine going on the pitch with a clear yellow card to start with. That is not possible.
The German team says it's not about making a political statement and they wanted to share an important message.
British Paralympian John McFall has become the world's first disabled astronaut.
The former sprinter has been named in the European Space Agency's latest intake of astronauts.
I was incredibly excited and proud of myself that I got through the selection process.
It's been quite a whirlwind experience.
Given that as an amputee I'd never thought that being an astronaut was a possibility.
McFall will be part of a study that looks at the changes needed to have more people with disabilities involved in future missions.
Science is for everyone and space travel, hopefully, can be for everyone.
Alright East Coasters, listen up because it's spider season.
Highly venomous funnel web spiders are now on the move, which means you might see one of these around your house.
Here's Josh.
Well, the weather's gradually starting to get more humid and you know what that means.
It's funnel web spider season.
Wait, what?
Yes, it is indeed funnel web spider season.
Well, at least in Sydney and parts of the East Coast.
During the funnel web spider breeding season, the chances of you encountering one in the home or in your backyard increase dramatically.
Jake here is a ranger at the Australian Reptile Park and he says that all the rain this year has brought about some pretty humid conditions,
which means we might be seeing a whole lot more of these guys.
Funnel web spiders are a highly venomous species which are capable of causing death incredibly quickly.
The Aussie Reptile Park is calling on responsible adults,
ahem, responsible adults, to collect the spiders and bring them to the park so they can make anti-venom to treat bites.
Jake says these spiders usually like cool, damp places around our house,
like in the laundry or the garage or inside our shoes or even wrapped up in our beach towels.
And if you or a friend do get bitten, there's a few things you need to do.
You would use a firm pressure bandage to bandage the entire bitten limb.
You would then immobilise the limb, immobilise the victim and seek medical treatment as quickly as possible.
So if you are making a trip to the beach this season, you might want to check that towel that you left on the floor earlier.
Oh, that one is going to end in tears.
Ah, thank you.
Speaking of thanks, today is Thanksgiving in North America.
Well, technically not quite yet because they haven't woken up.
Let's see how they've been preparing for the big day.
Streets in New York City have been closed off and cars replaced by these massive inflatable balloons
that are all being blown up for the Thanksgiving Day parade.
It is a full spectacle. Many, many balloons, floats, you name it, it's in our parade.
Yeah, this is a great American holiday celebration. We look forward to it all year.
In the meantime, onlookers were keen for a sneak peek.
How do you feel about the balloons?
It feels so great to be here. It's so pretty.
Wow, they're, like, humongous. This is, like, a dream come true to finally see them here
and, like, putting, like, air inside of them.
This year is the 96th time the parade's been held and organisers say there'll be 16 giant balloons.
Well, that's all we've got time for today. We'll see you tomorrow. Bye.
