What's better than bowling a 300 game??

What is better than bowling a 300 game? Well that is a question that I will answer a bit later on
in this video. If you watched my last video you would have seen I did a recap of one of the
craziest seasons in PBA history, the 2009-2010 season. Somebody suggested in the comments that
I do a recap for the 08-09 season as well and after some research I can see why this was suggested.
This season was pretty special and there were a ton of records broken as well as legacy defining
performances from Hall of Famers. So what I'm going to do in this video is do a recap of this
season tournament by tournament and we can look together at everything that happened throughout
this season. During the 08-09 season we had 21 events and while not as many as during the PBA's
peak it was still more than the following season as two events were dropped. Probably the biggest
change this season was the tour becoming the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour after the PBA struck
a three-year sponsorship deal. Previously it was Denny's who were the title sponsors but they did
remain a PBA sponsor and continued as the title sponsor of the Denny's Dick Webber Open. The next
major change to the tour was moving the World Championship to the start of the season as the
opening event. Obviously now this tournament is part of the World Series and takes place at the
end of the series. This opening major would be a very significant one for the history books
and especially for Norm Duke. Norm had a pretty poor start to the previous season after dealing
with injuries and he was in danger of losing his place on the tour. However an astonishing
turnaround took place in the second half of the season and he won the last two major titles of
meant he had a chance to do something no other PBA bowler had done before and that was to win
three majors in a row and it was a feat that he would manage to accomplish defeating Chris Barnes
convincingly in the title match. What a way to start off the season with some serious PBA history
being made. Next up we had the Viper Championship and just to note that these animal patterns were
not part of the World Series obviously as it wasn't actually created until the following season.
Brad Angelo would win the Viper and it was very significant for him as it marked his first ever
title. It took him some time to get there having been in 13 TV finals previously and it got rid of
the unofficial title he picked up as one of the best bowlers to never win a title. The third event
saw Walter Ray Williams Jr extend his all-time titles record to 45 with a win at the Lake County
Indiana Golden Anniversary Classic. This also set another record of 16 consecutive seasons winning
a title. Then we had a slightly different type of event the Ultimate Scoring Championship and this
was an attempt to get some big scores on the telecast as the pros were bowling on what was
essentially a house shot and it definitely worked as there were 18 300 games during the week and
Patrick Allen averaged 260 in qualifying. Unfortunately we didn't get close to seeing
any 300 games and the highest score of the telecast was by the winner Mike Wolfe with a 246
defeating Mike Scroggins. We then had four more animal pattern tournaments to take us to the end
of the first half of the season. The Comedian was won by Mike Machuga for his second title.
The Scorpion by Wes Mallott who we will definitely see more of in this video. The Cheetah was won by
lefty legend Parker Bone III and finally the Shark was won by another lefty Rhino Page. So a pretty
fascinating start to the season and the first three events alone saw a great deal of history
being made and many records broken. Now we enter 2009 and the first event of the year was a mixed
doubles event and the winning partnership were two legends Norm Duke and Liz Johnson. After this
we had the National Bowling Stadium Championship which used a dual pattern for the first time.
This one was extremely memorable as this was the telecast where Walter Ray left a pocket 810
in the 10th frame to lose to Patrick Allen. The Medford Classic saw Wes Mallott win his second
title of the season and start to bring himself into the player of the year discussion. Finally
the second major of the season came around the Tournament of Champions and this one
was an absolute classic. It was a nail-biting title match featuring Patrick Allen and Rhino
Page. Allen had managed to finish with a 267 game and yet Page still had an opportunity to win. He
struck in the first shot of the 10th and now needed at least nine spare to win but he completely missed
this shot at the bottom and it sailed left for a four count. Having made such a great shot in the
first ball of the 10th this took everybody by surprise and Allen would take home the TOC title
in shocking fashion. February saw the Dick Webber Open take place and once again
Norm Duke was victorious winning his third title of the season. A week later it was the third major
the USBC Masters and we had a complete surprise result in this one. A relatively unknown player
in John Nolan was making his television debut as the one seed. It was a pretty nervy title
match between him and Danny Wiseman and towards the end it looked like neither player was going
to step up and take control of the match but Nolan would squeak the win to become just the third
player at the time to win the USBC Masters for his first ever title. After this it would be a very fun
and rather unique event the Plastic Ball Championship where the players were bowling
on the cheetah pattern and could only use plastic balls. It would be yet another first time winner
with Jeff Carter earning his first title. The tightly packed schedule rolled on with the marathon
open and it was another familiar face winning this one. Wes Mallott won his third title of the season
and just like Norm Duke and now both of them were really vying for the player of the year award.
The next two events saw the same winner capture back-to-back titles for the first time in their
career and that was Chris Barnes winning the Match Play Championship and the Long Island Classic.
Then we had the final major of the year and probably the most prestigious event of them all
the US Open and again Norm Duke had put himself in contention to win another major and really cement
player of the year as he was the one seed. Now I do need to talk about what happened in the
semi-final match it was Chris Barnes versus Mike Scroggins and as Barnes headed into the 10th frame
it was all even. A strike would see him advance but he left a stone 8 pin. He picked up the spare
and had a chance to force a roll off but left a 10 pin. This was just a horrendous break and there's
no doubt Barnes should have really been playing Norm for the title after making such a great shot
but it was Scroggins who would advance and the lanes got really tough in the title match.
However Scroggins would prevail winning the US Open for his sixth title and after all that drama
and excitement we now have to head to Japan for the final title event of the season the Japan Cup
which was won by Patrick Allen. Now there's just one more event that I do need to mention and that
came in the summer of 2009 after the end of the season. It was a non-title event the King of
Bowling. As player of the year Wes Millot was the King of Bowling and players would challenge him
each week to try and take his crown. There were five telecasts in total but in each one
Millot was simply dominant and would win every single match and it's finally now that we can
answer the question in the title of this video. What is better than bowling a 300 game? Well the
answer is quite simply bowling two 300 games and that's exactly what Wes did. His five game total
here was staggering. He bowled 268, 258, 300, 257 and 300 for 1383 over five which is an average
of over 276. Although I think Norm was very unlucky to lose out on player of the year
I think this performance certainly justifies why Millot won the award that season and that brings
us to the end of this video. Another very wild and fantastic season and I really enjoyed looking
back on this one and yeah make sure to let me know in the comment section below if there's any other
PBA seasons that you think I should do this kind of recap for. As always I'd like to thank you very
much for all of your support and if you have enjoyed this video and you've not yet subscribed
