This is Nuuk in Greenland and it is one of the most insanely picturesque places we have ever
been. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and trip for us. Couldn't be
happier to be here. All the buildings here are colorful, the sun is out, it's hot today.
Everywhere you look it's like a painting here. Yeah and with like 17,000 people in the town
it's actually like a quarter of Greenland's population. This is the capital.
So we're about to get on a boat going to an abandoned settlement of Kanjek.
And the sun is out, it's been out since about 2.30 a.m.
Yeah, well I don't think it ever went away to be honest with you.
That's true. It's so gorgeous, we're gonna get on the water and I'm really excited.
Yeah, hopefully there's gonna be like no spooky ghosts at this place.
Why would there be?
Because it's an abandoned settlement. Like why do they like have to abandon the place?
Ghosts.
After about a 30-minute boat ride from Nook we
pulled slowly into this bay and all of a sudden you start seeing these old wooden buildings like
standing sentinel on hills overlooking you and all of the colors and all of the paints
slowly faded away from just time and being battered by the element. This is how life was
for Neanderthals you know 10,000 years ago. Just thinking like how you could live in a place like
that it just seems impossible it seems so archaic and yet within that it seems so beautiful too.
I try to use some frozen vegetables yeah and use the local ingredients
for example reindeer or fish and try to mix it together.
Anna-Vika runs a food blog called Greenlandic Food Lover and she's really changing the way
that people think about food in Greenland.
So can you tell us your favorite thing to eat or prepare?
I pretty much like everything but I usually eat the meat from here.
I guess with also like such little choice of ingredients if you have to
get quite creative with the cooking right?
Yeah and that's what I like about it.
It's like a fishy steak.
So you go and you hunt your own meat and then you forage your own local vegetables
and then you prepare something simplistic and delicious.
That sounds like the perfect way of living.
We've just taken the most amazing stunning gorgeous boat ride to here which is
we don't really know it's in the middle of nowhere.
We're following Jon our guide. It started out foggy this morning and we just like came into
this clearing with this around us. I mean it's absolutely unbelievable.
Hiking among the streams and the mountains the greenery around us
we didn't see one other person. I couldn't believe it.
We were the only people out there.
Our guide Jon said he hadn't done this hike in seven years even though he
leads these hikes every day almost.
It was a unique moment for him too having revisited this hike that he hasn't done in years.
This is the catch of the day. This is my dinner for the night.
Not only is this fire pit in one of the most beautiful locations I think I've ever seen
it's also in the jaws of a humpback whale.
We just got off the boat here. We have caught our dinner and now we're going to go eat it
and somebody else is going to prepare it for us which I really like the sounds of.
Let's go eat. I'm hungry. We're gonna be late for dinner.
There's definitely a feeling in Greenland that's hard to describe which I know is a cop-out but
you really have to feel it to know it's not just beauty. It's not just incredible surroundings.
It's not just the people. There is a feeling where you're connected and it's indescribable.
