Storyline:
Based on an actual strike against the Empire Zinc Mine in New Mexico, the film deals with the prejudice against the Mexican-American workers, who struck to attain wage parity with Anglo workers in other mines and to be treated with dignity by the bosses. In the end, the greatest victory for the workers and their families is the realization that prejudice and poor treatment are conditions that are not always imposed by outside forces. - Written by "Bob Shields" on IMdB.com
Reviews:
"Even today missing from many of the standard film histories, unknown to plenty of people who consider themselves knowledgable about movies and continuing to divide reviewers along party lines since Pauline Kael dismissed it as 'Communist propaganda' in 'Sight and Sound' in 1954 (positive reviews of this film tend to be judged 'not helpful' on the IMDb).
After nearly seventy years the most remarkable aspect of the film continues to be the feminist angle, but it's also an engrossing movie in its own right, obviously influenced by the Soviet silent cinema and with two faces among the ugly Americans later familiar once the dust had settled: Will Geer (a household name on TV at the time of his death a quarter of a century later as Grandpa Walton) and David Bauer (billed as 'David Wolfe') as the dastardly foreman 'Mr Barton', who settled in Britain, where his film credits later included 'Diamonds Are Forever'." - Written by "richardchatten" on IMDb.com
