Grazing for better grasslands in Berlin
TNC Europe launched its first Urban Greening Project in June 2020 in partnership with Berlin's Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf District Office. As part of our science-based urban green space development strategy, this pilot project at Wilmersdorf Stadium utilizes sheep and goats multiple times a year to control invasive woody plants and create space for grassland species. For Berliners exercising at the stadium, it's no longer a surprise to see sheep grazing where the grandstands once stood. This project aims to enhance urban plant and pollinator biodiversity while providing low-carbon landscape maintenance. The initiative highlights Berlin’s long-standing commitment to integrating nature into urban spaces, cementing the city’s status as a pioneer in urban ecology.
