Endangered Species Makes a Remarkable Recovery

Topeka shiner, a tiny fish that has been listed under the endangered species act for nearly three decades, is now found in prairie streams and wetlands across southwest Minnesota. The remarkable recovery is due in part to restoration of prairie ponds that give Topeka shiners the habitat they need to thrive. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has restored 130 of these ponds since 2014, largely on lands that the Nature Conservancy has helped protect and add to the Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge.
