冒 is composed of 冃 (hat) and 目 (eye) . 冃 is the picture of a hat, so 冒 depicts an eye being covered by a hat. The original meaning of 冒 is hat, but such meaning has been replaced by 帽.
If someone’s eyes are covered, he will dare to rush forward regardless of everything, so it has the meaning of offense and pretense.
