안녕하세요, 여러분. Sienna here.
Welcome to another Korean lesson.
Today, we're going to be learning about nuts, fruits, and vegetables in Korean.
By the end of this video, you're going to know how to say common words that you will use at the market or grocery store.
First, let's cover the basics.
Fruits in Korean is 과일.
Vegetables are called 야채.
And nuts are 견과류.
Let's try to use these words in sentences.

And nuts are 견과류.
Next, let's talk about some common fruits.
The first fruit on the list is apple.
The word for apple in Korean is 사과.
An example using apple is 사과 주세요.
This means, please give me an apple.
Take note that 사과 can also mean an apology.
Don't be surprised if your friend is mad at you and asks you for a 사과.
The second on the list is strawberry.
The Korean word is 딸기.
For example,
This means, I like strawberries.
The next fruits in Korean are very close to the English equivalent.
For example, mango is 망고.
Lemon is 레몬.

Now, let's move on to 야채 or vegetables.
First on the vegetable list is potatoes.
The word for potato is 감자.
At fast food restaurants, you will often have 감자튀김 or french fries with your burger.
The word 감자튀김 means fried potato.
Next on the list is the sweet potato.
In Korean, you would say 고구마.
For example,
This means, this sweet potato is so delicious.
The next vegetable is essential in Korean cuisine.
This vegetable is red pepper.
In Korean, it is 고추.
고추 is used to make 고추장 and 고춧가루.
고추장 means red pepper paste.
고춧가루 means red pepper powder.
They are the main ingredients in many famous Korean dishes.
For example, the Korean dish 비빔밥 is made of mixed rice with vegetables.
There is 고추장 on top of 비빔밥.
고추장 and 고춧가루 are often used to spice up recipes.
If you prefer not to have 고추장 or 고춧가루 on your food,
you can tell the chef 고추장이나 고춧가루는 빼주세요.
This means please leave out the red pepper paste or red pepper powder.
Let's cover a few more vegetables.
Onion in Korean is 양파.
Spring onion in Korean is 대파.
As you may have noticed, the syllable 파 appears in both 양파 and 대파.
When you hear 파, you can often expect an onion taste.
Now we will go over nuts or 견과류.
The first two nuts on the list are almonds and cashews.
Almond is 아몬드.
Cashew is 캐슈넛.
As you may notice, both 아몬드 and 캐슈넛 sound close to their English words.
They are easy to remember.
The next nuts on our list are expressed using native Korean words.
Peanut is 땅콩.
In the word 땅콩, 땅 means the ground and 콩 means bean.
If you put them together, 땅콩 means ground beans.
That's because 땅콩 is a bean from the ground.
If you have an allergy to peanuts, you may ask 이 음식에 땅콩이 들어 있나요?
This means, does this food contain peanuts?
Walnuts are called 호두.
For example, 호두 케이크 먹어봤어요?
This means, have you ever tried walnut cake?
Chestnuts are 밤.
This is the same word used for night.
The traditional way to prepare hot chestnuts is by heating them in a fire at night.
If you remember that they are heated at night, that should help you remember this word.
