Hyundai Ionic 5 N vs Mustang Dark Horse

This is the brand new Hyundai IONIQ 5N and apparently it's the best EV sports car ever made. It relies on software and technology to trick your little brain into thinking you're driving a real sports car. It's got fake engine noises and it has fake gears. The Mustang Dark Horse on the other hand doesn't need to trick you into anything. Oh it also has this thing called a six-speed manual transmission that's actually real but with cars like this becoming more and more rare. Is there any hope for the future of enthusiast sports cars? Let's find out. These cars might not seem that similar but they do make close to the same horsepower and they also cost the same. So we're going to put these cars through a bunch of tests to see if this weird crossover EV thing is actually any good or if it's just another crappy Tesla knockoff. All right so first impressions of this interior. Really nice. Pretty nice. The leather is really nice. The layout's really simple and also you might notice you have some paddles which is interesting because this is an EV. What's that all about? Yeah so that is what's called their NE Shift which is a simulated eight-speed dual clutch transmission. So it's not real. It's all simulated. Also what you're hearing right now is not real engine noise. Of course not. It doesn't sound real. It definitely sounds like a video game for sure. Shall we play with the sound? Yeah let's do it. Okay let's see how it goes. That's not real. That's all speaker. That's kind of dumb. Okay let's do supersonic. It's a jet. I feel like I'm in a space mountain. Well this thing has 601 horsepower. 545 pound-feet torque. Yeah so this thing weighs 4,800 pounds. Hefty girl. That is a big girl. That is a big girl. But you know what? 600 horsepower in a 4,800 pound car still feels heavy. All right now you might be wondering what is Hyundai N? Well Hyundai N is like BMW M. It's Hyundai's performance division that was founded in 2017. It stands for Namyang, the company's test circuit in Korea. Any car that's gotten the N treatment features stiffer suspension, other chassis and handling upgrades, stickier tires, and far more performance out of a handful of turbocharged engines. Since its inception the N division has been overseen by Hyundai's executive vice president and head of high performance vehicles Albert Biermann. That doesn't sound like a guy from Korea. Oh it's because he's not. He was the former guy at BMW M. And while N may not be as prolific as the likes of BMW M, they have been manufacturing fun and affordable cars for a while now. I always say this whenever I get in a car. It's all about how you feel inside this car. So what they're trying to do is get you to feel like you're in a more traditional gas-powered vehicle. It feels like a normal car without taking things away. I don't have to use this screen. All those things that minimalistic stuff that we normally complain about when we're inside of EVs, this doesn't do it. It's fun to drive. So far I'm on the positive side. Okay all right. The newest trim addition to Mustangs in a really long time. Yeah it's uh this thing's sick. 5.0 Coyote making 500 horsepower. 500? Yeah. 100 per liter. Yeah pretty good. 418 pound-feet of torque. Now in EV you lose all the you lose all the noises. This you don't lose any noise. It feels like you know a traditional sports car. Clutch pedal. It slaps your foot back because it recoils. So far what are you thinking? Well uh my heart and my soul and everything that I hold dear to my car loving uh body is this sucker right here. Well what do you think about this thing? So far it's it's impressive. It's a lot of fun. It makes us laugh. It makes us giggle. It's not weird inside. It's also pretty original and good looking on the outside but at the end of the day it's still an EV. Then we can talk about money, specs, all we want. How about we do a little head-to-head drag race? All I need to not do is pull a perfect Mustang guy and run this sucker into a wall. Earlier we mentioned that the Hyundai Ioniq N makes 601 horsepower. 545 foot-pounds of torque. Not bad but it has a little bit of a trick up its sleeve. It has the NGB button which is the N-Grin Boost right. This cranks up the power to 641 horsepower and 568 foot-pounds of torque. That's 40 extra horsepower at the push of a button. Jimmy's out here holding his arm still a little too long. It'll do zero to 60 in three seconds but it only lasts 10 seconds. My heart's beating right now. I think that's enough for a drag race but I need to meet the proper conditions for it work. I'm at 76 percent battery right now and I press the N-G button and it just tells me it can't be activated. So what do I do? Yeah you're letting your thing boot up huh? I'm ready. I'm itching over here. Ready to go. It's okay. I got the car ready. I'm good to go. Absolutely smoked. Absolutely smoked. That's so funny. Doing a little drifty stuff in a Mustang is about as much fun as you can have in a I think you corded it. No way. Or we ran over cords. What is that? That was fun. It didn't win the drift competition but it did win the drag race so that's one-to-one right now for the Mustang and the Ioniq. Let's see how it does in a hot lap. The real test is upon us. Jeremiah is doing his warm-up lap and he's going to do a flying hot lap. Probably two. That way we can see the real test of which one of these cars is the fastest around streets of Willow. All righty. The clock's ticking. Seems like he's ripping pretty hard. Something happened. I'm losing throttle here. Oh it's getting too hot. It got too hot. It won't let me go. Cut throttle. Oh no. That was s***. 128.15. That's slow for Jer. Yeah we lost power. You lost power? Yeah. Because of the heat? Yeah. Oh no. Yeah it cut off in the back straight going over the hill. Do you have the heat on? No I got nothing. I mean I had the air on. You had AC on? Yeah dog. Come on man. I ain't doing this. Just leave the windows down. Yeah. All right Jeremiah is going for a second hot lap with the Dark Horse Mustang. It had a little bit of a heating issue in the first lap so let's see how the second one goes. Go go go go go. All right it got a little hot at the end but that's probably as good as we're gonna get. What was the time? What was the time Justin? I'm asking you because I didn't know you were doing a hot lap. Oh I can't f***. Did it at least feel fast? It felt fast. Towards the end it still, dude it's so hot. It was at 1.119 degrees on this thing. Oh no. So it cuts it back a little bit when it starts getting hot. It dropped the temp pretty quick but another thing that might be in its favor or against it depending on if an EV gets too hot. Yeah we were talking about that. Will the EV be able to cool itself? We'll see. And not limit you or will it do worse? Let's find out. Let's find out. The Hyundai Ioniq 5N gets to do its hot lap and I'm going to time it and see if it compares or beats the Dark Horse. So far it's holding up pretty well but this is where the real thing matters. It's one thing to be quick in a drag race. It's another thing to be fast around the turns. Alright. It does dance a lot. It's sliding around though. Come on old girl.
