In this video I'm going to be going over some of the easiest
crops to grow in poor soil. So if you have poor soils like clay
or any soil that doesn't have much nutrition, this is the video for you.
So without much further ado, let's get started.
The first crop that can grow fairly well in poor soil
is beans. Beans, what we've noticed personally, have grown quite well for us
in poor soils like clay and other soils that don't have much nutrition in them.
It doesn't really matter which variety of beans you have.
If it's the dwarf beans or the climbing beans,
it really doesn't matter. All you need is basically just like a trellis
to support the climbing ones. And also with the
dwarf ones or bush beans, we do like to support them with a stick or something
just to keep those beans off the ground and to prevent them from rotting.
With green beans, make sure to just pick them as much as possible
every day or every second day just to make sure that they will continue to
produce fruit because that's what we've done and they just continue to pump out
a lot of fruit, especially the climbing bean variety.
The next crop that can grow fairly well in poor soil conditions
are sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes, what we've noticed, can
easily be grown in poor soil conditions because when we plant like a few shoots
they will just multiply and spread all over the place. With sweet
potatoes, do make sure to plant them in well-draining soil
because what we've noticed before is if the soil is very cloggy
or has too much water in it, then the sweet potatoes tend to absorb
too much water and that's not good for if you want to fry them.
Sweet potatoes also require very little care because as you can see here in
these beds, these beds were just empty beds
with nothing with just basically weeds and then sweet potatoes were planted
basically as a covering and in about six months time we harvested
a great decent amount of sweet potatoes. The next crop that can grow fairly
easily in poor soil conditions is lettuce. Lettuce tends to grow fairly
well in poor soil conditions especially the
leaf lettuce. We don't usually try to grow the ice
like the iceberg lettuces because they have a little bit of a harder time
and they're a little bit more trickier to grow in comparison to the leaf lettuce.
The next crop that can be grown fairly easily in poor soil condition
is tomato. It's a bit different from the other ones
because they can they can perform a lot better
when they're planted in better conditions like better soil
but they do tend to grow fairly okay in poor soil conditions what I've noticed
because I've seen some even in the cracks of concrete and still producing
tomatoes. Make sure to position tomatoes in at
least about six hours of sunlight that they're receiving at least six
hours of sunlight because this will really help boost them
to grow and produce nice red tomatoes. The next crop that can grow fairly
easily in poor soil condition is silverbeet. If possible do make sure
to give them a liquid fertilizer of maybe some high nitrogen something with
high nitrogen. Examples of high nitrogen fertilizer
there's basically there's a lot of things that contain a lot of nitrogen
so chicken manure, fish manure and then blood
those are all very high sources of nitrogen so if you give those to those
plants the silverbeet and swiss chad they will tend to grow a lot better
because nitrogen is responsible for producing green leaves and
the green leaves are the part which you want to eat in those vegetables.
