South Korean President Yun Suk-yol just agreed to lift his martial law order.
This is only hours after the country's parliament voted to block the measure.
Now the troops deployed for martial law affairs have been withdrawn and the State Department
said Washington did not receive advance notice on the martial law declaration,
but the U.S. commitment to South Korea is, quote, ironclad amid the situation.
The Biden administration is in contact with the South Korean government,
according to a local news agency.
The U.S. Embassy in South Korea and the State Department are also closely
monitoring the latest development.
China's embassy in South Korea soon released a statement afterwards
reminding its citizens to exercise precaution and to stay safe.
The South Korean president earlier today declared martial law during an overnight address,
claiming that the opposition was sympathizing with communist North Korea
and paralyzing the government.
He also condemned the opposition for filing a large number of impeachments
against prosecutors and other senior officials, including the South Korean defense minister.
The opposition leader blasted the martial law declaration
and called on South Korean citizens to gather for protests against the order.
Angry protesters soon surrounded the parliament.
Police and troops were seen clashing with the protesters.
Lawmakers were trying to block the troops from entering the parliament building.
Hours later, parliament unanimously voted to overturn the order.
