Introduction to the work:
Question: How much time do excellent violinists need to rehearse Beethoven's Violin Concerto? The answer: just two days. What reads like a naïve estimate was a reality at the premiere. Franz Clement, an eminent violin virtuoso, only got his hands on the sheet music 48 hours before his performance. If contemporaries are to be believed, he nevertheless played Beethoven's concerto like a young god. Clement, ten years younger than Beethoven, had started out as a child prodigy. When Joseph Haydn was awarded an honorary doctorate at Oxford, the then ten-year-old was the special act. Three years later, Beethoven wrote to Clement: “Nature and art are competing to make you one of the greatest artists.” In his early 20s, the violinist became concertmaster and orchestra director at the Theater an der Wien. In this role, he regularly organized academies, which were often designed to showcase him as a virtuoso. This was also the case on December 23, 1806, when he played Beethoven's violin concerto as well as a “sonata on a single string with inverted violin”. Skeptics thought this was a gimmick, but the audience cheered. And Beethoven hoped that his violin concerto would shine all the more effectively in this setting. But the overall reaction was rather lukewarm. One first performance critic thought he knew why: the composition seemed too complex, too ramified and therefore supposedly incoherent.

Perhaps this impression arose because Beethoven had rushed to complete the violin concerto in order to meet the performance date shortly before Christmas. When it came to preparing the work for printing, he worked intensively on it. In this form, the concerto presents a wealth of magnificent moments: the opening with the famous timpani motif, which appears again and again in the first movement; the floating of the main theme; the delicate touch of the slow movement or the exuberance of the hunting theme in the finale: after a moderate start, Beethoven's violin concerto has established itself as a sonorous classic.
