Following an exhibition titled Kemet, Egypt in Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul and Funk,
the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, a team of archaeologists from the Dutch Museum,
has faced a ban on conducting excavation in Egypt's Saqqara Necropolis. The Egyptian
authorities expressed their disapproval of the exhibition, accusing the Museum of distorting
history with its Afro-centric approach, CNN reported. This development was reported by
the Dutch newspaper NRC on Monday, stating that the head of foreign missions of the
Egyptian Antiquities Service conveyed their concerns to the RMO via email.
Wim Wieland, the Museum's managing director, confirmed to CNN through email that the
Egyptian authorities have indeed refused to grant the institution a permit for the upcoming
excavation season in Saqqara. He further verified that the journalist who wrote the NRC article
had seen the email from the Egyptian authorities.
